I have known other people in your situation. I have also known quite a lot of aspies who were diagnosed AFTER joining the military, or after leaving, and all except one, had bad experiences (some of which forced them to leave).
The army in the UK excludes quite a lot of people on health grounds, they can afford to be very choosey. There are enough people applying with absolutely no potential problems that they don't need to risk taking someone who has the potentail to have difficulties.
On the other hand, in the first and second world war nearly all restrictions were dropped and people were used as cannon fodder. I don't think that's a good situation either.
As a fascist and a patriot I believe it is my duty to serve in the armed forces.....................I have always aspired to the stories of soldiers of the greatest commitment, like Yukio Seki and Hiroo Onada, and I am told they do not need me. It is the highest purpose of anyone to serve there country, and a life lived for ones own is not a life truely lived, and I am told they do not need me.
A FASCIST? Now I see why you are so vehemently anti-communist. Onada hid in a Phillipine jungle for 29 years because he thought WWII had not ended.

A life lived for one's own is indeed a life lived to the full. A life wasted on sacrificing yourself for your country is the complete opposite.
Personally, I would never join the military in a combat role - I do not wish to put my life at risk for my country, I would only do that for one of very few individuals.
Sacrificing oneself brings you to your rightful state? That seems completely backwards. Dieing on a battlefield or otherwise helping others at your own expense is martyrdom - an act of stupidity. Altruism is not a good thing - nobody can benefit where everyone is concerned more with others than with their own gain. When everyone is concerned with their own gain then everyone benefits.
You have to admire a man who is so dedicated to his cause.
No, you don't. Not when the 'cause' in question is complete shite.
If you think that a life spent licking boots and murdering people is serving 'the highest purpose', then I think you're better off hiding in the jungle for 29 years (or however long it takes you to come to your wits).
If he personally admires him, then that's his purogative.
If you really want to do join, apply and do not tell them you have AS. They are going to give you psychological testing anyway. There are plenty of types of jobs in the military besides ones that someone with AS might find difficult. It really depends on the individual how they will perform in certain situations or certain jobs. Only you should be aware of what will be expected of you in training and for your duties before you join up.
As for arguements about whether war is right or wrong, I have heard them all. What really is the basis of this post is discrimination against people with AS.
The Armed Forces in most countries just discriminate against people with any type of disability. If its on their list, they don't want it. They have enough trouble dealing with all the normal healthy people they send into battle and have their arms and legs blown off. That costs them money. They probably figure that people with AS will cost them money ot medicate or something??? If it comes down to a crunch, they would enlist people with different "disabilities". Watch the film "Enigma" and see if you do not find a few aspies working on code breaking or other jobs.
You can PM me on this one tiger if you need information.
Thats the point, when they really need people they will taken anyone, and you dont get a choice. Like any employer, when they can afford to be picky they will do so.
I agree. We have the right to post and say things we want because people in the military (like my dad, step dad, hubby, 2 uncles, grandfather, great grandfather......) have all made sure we could. At least here in the USof A. It is not for everyone. But at least we have that right because of them.
Personally, I don't have a problem with people who serve in the armed forces - but they shouldn't delude themselves into thinking it's some kind of sacred duty to fight "for your country". Freedom of speech didn't require military action to gain by the way - it's written into the US consitution and the UN declaration of human rights
Of course, anyone wanting to join the armed forces will be asked why during the interview process and screening.
The problem is that once you are in - you have to go to war even if you do not agree with the current government policy or the cause. Government leadership changes and with it the policies. You have to obey orders even if you do not agree. The penalty for not obeying orders can be death (sometimes death for obeying orders) and charged with treason. Some people go to jail for treason but some are shot right on the the spot.
I think some people were really surprised when they joined the army before the war with Iraq. They joined to get money for college, to get away from home - like it was some summer camp adventure. Then they got send away to war - surprise - even if they did not want to go.
A person will high ideals can sometimes be disillusioned when they find corruption in the system. You will find out when you join, people just have a whole variety of reasons why they are there. In combat (should you qualify) all that idealism can go away and you are there just to survive. With all that disillusion and disappointed, you still have to obey orders. So do not join up unless you think about that.
M he was quoting Einstein. I dont think he had any way of knowing you, personally, were in a marching band.
Who was Einstein talking about? Hitler?
The miltaristic in general, although he did severly hate Hiter and Nationalism.
For very good reason.
If someone wishes to join the military in a role suitable for them then I wish them all the best - this is a personal choice. However, I can not picture many aspies would be suitable in a combat role.
Personally if conscription ever comes up in the UK then I am suddenly heavily disabled and completely useless for anything. I would not want to work for the military even in a non-combat role. Working in a military data center somewhere would be cool - until it was bombed.
Yet, the Nazi regime was evil and needed to stopped.
I find this to be one of the biggest ironies of the 20th century. As evil as Hitler and the Nazis were, Stalin and the Soviet Union were 10 times more evil. More people died in the gulags of Siberia than in the Nazi deathcamps. This is forgotten today because the Soviets were our allies.
Personally if conscription ever comes up in the UK then I am suddenly heavily disabled and completely useless for anything.
And if we all had that attitude, we would all continue to be thought of as heavily disabled and completely useless for anything, long after the war was over.
Civil rights isn't something that you can demand only when it is convenient for you.
In the United States, the black soldiers who fought in WWII were the main impetus for the civil rights movement. They could have stayed safely behind the lines mopping floors and peeling potatoes, which was about all that blacks were thought to be good for, but instead they volunteered for combat in large numbers, to prove that they could do everything a white soldier could do. That changed the attitudes of a great many people.

We don't need to become martyrs
