Aspies For Freedom

I have just seen a tv documentary called Megastructures. Its a very good show, and this episode featured a huge man made island in Dubai.

They are making numerous man made islands for tourists, and for people to live permanently, one of them even replicates a map of the world.

They are able to achiece such feats because they are an extremely rich nation. I personally think that the island structures are overall bad for the environment and are unneccessary, but they are achieving on a mass scale what many of us would like with the homeland idea.

Many people think its impossible, I think it may currently be possible on a small scale, but what they are creating in Dubai shows that our ideas are entirely reasonable in the scheme of things, and that if we also had capital it would become possible.

And why should it be unreasonable if a group of people want to make a holiday resort or place to live?

This is one of the 'islands' http://www.jp-petit.com/humour/Dubai/palm_satellite.jpg

This is another one that is being built http://www.tijanre.ae/images/thepalm/the...r_plan.jpg

This is the one that replicates a world map

"The World Islands are a collection of man-made islands shaped into the continents of the world, located off the coast of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates. It will consist of 300 small private artificial islands divided into four categories - private homes, estate homes, dream resorts, and community islands. Each island will range from 250,000 to 900,000 square feet (23,226 to 83,613 square meters) in size, with 50 to 100 metres (164 to 328 feet) of water between each island. It will cover a total area of 9 kilometers (5.4 miles) in length and 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) in width, surrounded by an oval shaped breakwater. The only means of transportation between the islands will be by marine or air transport."

If money is the only difference between a fantasy and reality I think it puts the whole idea into greater perspective.
If it were possible, that would be nice.

In the past I have suggested something like a bed and breakfast/small hotel at a holiday resort or nature reserve where aspies and auties could holiday.

I think that is feasible, but people have still said it's not possible, and haven't shown much interest.

But ANY kind of group could set that as a goal, it seems that there is an element within the community that actively are against any plans for a homeland/holiday centre just on principle.
You are only talking about yourself then clearly.

Why project how you feel about yourself onto others?

Anyway...back on topic.....
Ramarren, a holiday place doesnt have to please everyone. Do nts all like the same holiday places? It would only have to please some.

Surely an island would decrease isolation as people would want to meet each other...or why else would they have joined??

I think that this is one major flaw in thinking, all aspies are not a clone, so we wont ever all agree on something. But that shouldn't hold back the many that do want create something positive.
There are far fewer aspies, but if a holiday resort catered for autistics and their families, and there is no other options at the moment, it would surely be better than nothing as a chance to have a break and meet others.

Or....an even more realistic option...a group booking at a holiday resort.

That human-made island thingy is going to look interesting in seventy years or so- it'll be underwater and make a nice reef for the fishies to live.  Do they have any plans to raise the surface up as the sea levels rise?
Alison

They will raise them, they are constantly working on reforming them to fight against nature, they have budgeted for it.

They have dredgers that build up the sand level (the islands are made of sand and rock) but they are very near the coastline so they are somewhat sheltered. Some of the designs are connected to the mainland via a pathway.

It's an interesting project, however I don't think it has much appilcation to us. First we would have to build 200 miles off shore, where the water would be too deep. The second problem would be location. Dubai is in an area with calm seas; if it was built else where they could be damaged by storms. The third problem is money as stated above.

So, if this project get under way, then the floating island idea would be the simplest and least expense way to build.
Well I think its a lot cheaper to buy existing islands or land.
This was just an example of doing something extraordinary.

Ideas such as this holiday are perhaps the best first step. Let's build things up slowly Wink
Perhaps people should focus on realistic immediate goals
On Antartica, its one of the most hostile environments on the planet, and there are strong restrictions on waste there, everything has to be removed that is taken there, including human waste.

The cost would be phenomenal.

Precendents such as gated communities and techno– and homo–villages abound.  Perfectly do-able.

Gareth wasn't commenting on the whole idea, only on having a community in Antartica.

I do not think a community on Antartica is feasible.  It is too isolated and unless some very effecient form of energy or means of producing food is availabe, a huge amount of money and energy would be wasted on transporting supplies and waste out the community.   I think also any long term and sizable colony on Antartica would be damaging ecologically.  I know there are bases set up there already but most of the people there are scientists studying the ecological system/weather there.

Does anyone know more about the research bases on Antartica?
There would be another practical problem; getting people to move there. It's an interesting idea to think about, but it presents too many problems.
We are working on a site to explore all the various options in regard to a true offline community. However, i'll say now that a moon base or antartica is looking quite unrealistic

The group holiday we have planned for september, as I have previously mentioned is a good first step. There are other ideas which are within the realm of possiblities too.......
