As The Vines return, their frontman opens up

Vines frontman Craig Nicholls has broken his silence over his diagnosis with Aspergers Syndrome, as the band return to action.

On the eve of the release of third album 'Vision Valley' , Nicholls told the Observer how he was diagnosed with the condition after a series of erratic live performances.

"I think it's a mild case that I have," he said. "I remember when I was 15, I spoke to a couple of psychologists. But I don't think they diagnosed me with anything. So. Maybe it grew. Maybe it became more intense when I started in the band. But I'm not really sure."

Of the decision to continue the band as a largely studio-based project, he said: "I feel comfortable writing songs. It's a good outlet for me. Seeing as though I'm not that social, it's a way to communicate."

Nicholls also revealed that he gave up smoking marijuana nine months ago. "It just fit with my personality," he said. "I never drank alcohol. (Smoking) was just the thing I did. It made me calm. But it started not making me calm at all. It made me edgy, so it wasn't good."

Nicholls also hinted that it was likely that The Vines could be back to play shows in the UK at some point this year, but that nothing is confirmed.

'Vision Valley' is released on April 3 through Heavenly , preceded by a single 'Gross Out' on March 21.

He looks about 15!

That's a common AS trait, I gather.
http://www.rathergood.com/vines/ This is my only exposure to the Vines.
My kids think this is fall on the floor funny.

It bugs me that some famous people only seem to think it's important enough to share a diagnosis/suspicion of diagnosis when they're in trouble. It makes it look like autistic people/aspies whatever...get in a lot of trouble. Or like using AS as an excuse or something. Why not share the information when things are normal and calm? Beh.
ROFLMBO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That was awesome!
I wonder what he'll do now. Hopefuly, he won't become a spokesperson for CAN or NAAR or something.

Get Firefox. It closes quicker.

he didnt know he had AS until after he got into trouble.
it might look like they quickly went hunting for a label to slap on him so as to keep im out of trouble. but there is an article somewhere out there tht says it was one of his crews that first suspected, long before everything came to a head, that his erratic behaviour might be due to something clinical and they had tried to get him help.

You can't half tell he's been to see a psych, with his mouthfull of psychobabble jargon. Oh yes Craig, we all need a good outlet. (sarcasm) I thought he made AS sound like a mental illness.

An outlet is just a means of expressing yourself, right?
The word has sexual connotations.  :? NT shrinks and the like are forever telling unexpressive and minimally sociable people that it isn't healthy to not be constantly expressing one's emotions and inner thoughts to all and sundry. They have quite an obsession with "outlets".
Well, if it makes him happy, shouldn't we be happy for him too?
He's a hugely talented musician and I think he deserves success. It just grates on my nerves when people start talking like Dr *** Freud after seeing some pretentious shrink or reading some pop psychology book.
CATHARTIC!!!
but lots of musicians describe music as an 'outlet' anyway.
I don't know anything about that Leonard Cohen song, sorry. The name Lili Marlene is a tribute to Marlene Dietrich. She was a star, but in her own unique style.

"Catharsis" is one of those ridiculous Freudian theories, isn't it? Freud had a great pile of absurd and revolting theories and pretentious jargon words; id, ego, superego, transference, catharsis, complexes, phallic symbols, death wishes, sublimation, repression, oedipal conflict, electra complex etc etc.
The Vines were on "Live at the Wireless" on Triple J radio tonight. Well worth listening to. I think it will be repeated on Sunday.
