This person is becoming so prominent I really worry now that autism speaks, or CAN will try and nab him as a spokesman, and we will see him paraded around to raise money for a cure. Sad

that's a very important point that i had running in the back of my head ever since the story first came out.  i sure hope he says no and really uses his status to help the mainstream to debunk some autism myths.

and i hope if they do any movie on this, it's a postive movie, and protrays autism as okay, not evil.

Because of his autism, McElwain didn't begin talking until he was five and still lacks some social skills. Despite suffering from the little-understood developmental disorder, he has served as all-around motivator for the Greece Athena High School basketball team, in Greece, N.Y., a Rochester suburb.

ugh...we don't suffer from autism, we suffer from discrination against autism.  and i know some non autistic people don't speak until 5 or whatever.  of course, i didn't start talking till i was three and still have slight diffculty in my speech.  i'm revising this paragraph...

there...that's better.

If I were a kid today, and I was told I had to play sport, I'd reply "Sorry, sport is against my religion, I'm autistic".

I don't see why you can't compete in sports as an autistic. I loathe team sports, but I do fine in individually based competition. I'm in a Gyroogi Sparring tournament tommorow

Bush trying pretend he cares about Autistic kids to draw the critics away from the NT kids getting killed by his policies overseas.

NT and others within the US borders defamed, poisoned, and killed as well.

is it possible to summarise it?

Bush (under influence of the pharmaceutical lobby) has approved a federal program for screening everybody in the country, starting with schoolchildren (because they are easy targets) for presumed "mental illness". Obviously, when you test that many people, particularly with subjective and unscientific methods, many will be found to have "mental illness". So the program is a bonanza for the drug companies. Although Bush is a republican, and therefore presumably rejects such federalism, he can't say no because he is beholden to pharma for his seat in the White House.

So the point I was making is that it's not so much that Bush cares about autistic children or other children, as that he is indebted to the drug companies that stand to make a lot of money off of them.

Amy Wrote:
How is he possibly under the control of drug companies?

Because they are the major contributors to his campaigns. I won't say too much more about it, because I fear we are straying off topic.

We can go off topic.

I just noticed you are a moderator, so I guess I don't have to fear being scolded for answering your questions!

Amy Wrote:
A lot of drug companies are rivals to each other, and they can't all pay for his campaigns.

They are bitter rivals in some areas, but at the same time there's a lot of cooperation and cartel activity among them.

Amy Wrote:
Do you live in America?

No, but the situation isn't much different in the rest of the "developed" world. Why do you ask?

Lili Marlene Wrote:
I have read that George Bush Senior was on the payroll of drug company Eli Lilly, and the current US president has ties to this company as well.

That's right, and Eli Lilly's major cash cows being psychiatric drugs like the stimulant Prozac and the neuroleptic Zyprexa has nothing to do with Bush Senior's inaugurating "the decade of the brain"?

Lili Marlene Wrote:
Apparently George Bush Senior was taking a new drug put out by this company and he got severe side effects and puked all over some people

In prim and proper Japan, of all places. One wonders about a nation as great as the United States of America being led by a president who is so stupid as to take a drug that he doesn't have any experience with when there isn't even anything wrong with him.

Lili Marlene Wrote:
Something is obviously very corrupt in a country where new drugs are cleared by the govt (the FDA) for release to the public, but are later withdrawn from the market after the FDA finds that the drugs are too dangerous

You're right, the entire drug market as well as the watchdog agencies are corrupt. Also the methods by which physicians are trained, bribed, and brainwashed to prescribe drugs are corrupt. If you like I can recommend some books on this subject, so you won't think I'm making this up.
