Let me know if the link works
Its a newsnight documentry on special needs schools in the uk and how children access these schools and the lack of cover in the UK at this moment in time. It features the parent of an autistic person who setup her own school due to her councils lack of provision for her son. Quite interesting thought i would share it
It works.
There is a girl named Kara who has Aspergers and she goes to a special school. The film shows her learning Science at her school.
Some parents of autistic kids in the city where I live are trying to decide which is best for their kids; integration into regular schools or should they start a special school for autistic kids. Does the AFF have a clear policy on this question?
I know that in my kids' school this year they have some diagnosed autistic kids in the early childhood years classes. I don't know who they are or how they are doing, as my kids are older and don't mix with those age groups. I also know that there are kids with AS and autism and ADHD diagnoses in the gifted educational programme that my kids do. This is in the official handouts from this programme.
Autistic kids shouldn't have to leave the mainstream educational system where we live due to bullying, as there are elaborate systems for behaviour management and bullying prevention in place.
As far as I know, the bullying prevention tend not to work, but because they are in place some schools refuse to acknowledge that bullying takes place. The equivilent of closing your eyes and going "If I can't see the elephant it won't squash me in it's charge", I feel. Only with less human pancakes.
As for which is best, well, I'd imagine it varies from a kid to kid basis.
