I am supposed to be a client of a government agency that helps find people with disabilities work. So far, they have not been too helpful. They had someone come in recruiting for a bank for telephone bankings but I have central auditory processing problems. Other than delivering flyers, they have offered nothing. They just seem to either have programming jobs or clerical work. They do not seem to have much experience or help for people with learning disabilities or autism. I think they are more focussed on physical disabilities.
They have some programs where the worker trains for the first month for free (only receiving bus fare or lunch from the employer) after which the employer can decide to hire the person. I asked if I could try on my own to get this sort of arrangement. I was told ok but they never told me how or the rules or how they would help.
This what I thought I might do: write to scientists at the local university and ask if they wanted to participate in such an arrangement sending along my cv/resume. If they contacted me back then I would call the agency and see what they would do for me. I have tried applying for jobs at this university but even simple jobs that I could do and seem over qualified, they never called me for. I know some scientists will hire research assistants and pay them half the union rate but I really need to get some money.
I have tried applying to some stores locally but they were not interested in hiring me since I do not have any "retail experience." I have been told that I should not mention my AS or disabilities until after hiring but I can hardly get though the interviews. I think that if I write to the scientists that I will put that I have a disability but not say what until I get an interview. Then I will tell them what accomodations I need.
Any suggestions or problems?
