— A 38-year-old city man was arrested Friday and charged with sexually assaulting an autistic teenager who became pregnant, police said.

Police said Jeffrey Cunningham, of Spruce Street, had been avoiding authorities at work and at home since the incident was first reported Jan. 22.

Bridgeton police, along with members of the U.S. Marshals Service New York-New Jersey Task Force and the state Department of Human Services arrested Cunningham at a friend's Birch Street home early Friday, police said.

“It was a good cooperative effort to get Mr. Cunningham,” said Detective Lt. Michael Gaimari, who praised the work of Detective Jahaira Roman. “He's been trying to evade us since after the incident was reported.”

Authorities said they learned of the sexual assault, which took place late last year, after the 16-year-old girl was discovered to be pregnant.

Gaimari did not release the name of the victim and would not comment on whether Cunningham and the girl were related.

Gaimari did say the victim and the accused knew each before the assault.

Cunningham was lodged in Cumberland County Jail on $300,000 cash bail, police said.

Cunningham's family could not be reached for comment.
