I'm sure someone will be looking down from the Book Repository.
Trollette, we do have a sticky thread with guidelines.

Its peaceful protest, holding a sign and handing out leaflets.
Passive and informative.
Added them Braves
Insomniac, maybe you are a bit confused, we are not arranging those walks.
We are against the walks and want to protest at them.
And there is one in the UK.
NAAR UK walk

Sunday, 2ND July 2006
The Great Park, Windsor

Last year, because of the london bombings just beforehand, we decided it would not be appropriate to protest.
This year we will be having a protest there.
Tiger of malaysia, there is usually more details given out on their website shortly before the events.
It would be fantastic if you could be present.
Can you come to the AFF meeting tonight in the chat room?
If not we can let you know any arrangements nearer the time.

Most likely people will meet at the entrance on the morning of the protest. It may be filmed by media/documentary makers too.
A woman I met online emailed me this evening looking for donations for the CAN Walk in her area. She has an adorable 6yo(?) Aspie grandson named R----.

Here is the response I sent her:

-------

I'm sorry, M-----, I can't support CAN.  Their anti-autistic propaganda makes me ill.  The adult autistic community is not looking for a cure.  We want acceptance.

R---- wouldn't be R---- anymore if he was "cured."  And when CAN's research for a genetic test becomes reality, the next generation of people like R----, and me, and my kids will be "selected out" - just like 90% of Down's babies are now.  :-(

Cindy

--------

I wonder if she will email me back?
She emailed me back.

------

Okay Cindy, thanks anyway I understand.

------

That's it.  No signature, nothing.  Guess I hit a nerve!
Thanks.  That was the first time I spoke out to anyone.  LOL

I don't know how to phrase this, nor am I fully sure of my own thoughts, but ...

I'm not sure protests are very productive.  Yes, it gets press and maybe awareness, but it also solidifies the black v. white way of thinking that keeps anything from ever reaching a reasonable solution.  Just look at the abortion issue in the US - the vast majority of people favor what is basically a middle ground (legal but rarely, rarely used) and yet as a nation we can't get any where near it.

I hate polarizing.

Effective change involves acknowledging the small bits of truth in what the other side says, getting them to understand your truths, and working together to figure out how to make the pieces fit.  You go inside the opponent and work with him, not against him.

Are there efforts in this direction?

Debbie

ps - Cindy, I liked your email.   You were polite and you made very clear the issue that is the trigger point - people need to know this, what the worry is.  As for your friend's response - I found it nuetral.  She probably needs time to process the information and decide what she thinks about it.

Firstly, it's not just the USA, we are worldwide.
The protests have actually caused more discussion with curebie groups, so they have not made more of a divide.

At the last protest Gareth got to talk directly to the Head of Autism Speaks in the UK. Without the protest that would never have happened.

Oh really, that sounds interesting. Is there any chance of some more details of this, and indeed of the protest itself and its upshot, being put on the site here?
Yes, we are also going to try and get some of the footage that was shot.
In the near term (i.e the next few decades) the only realistic cure is actually prenatal testing and abortion. However, it is likely that autism could be "cured" using a drug. The side effects would be most horrendous however. I already have a theory on how such a drug could work in fact.
