Dr phil called it an illness and disease?
I even said on WP both would be used,I knew he'd do it.
I've been reading the posts from the childs' mum on the dr phil forum, and she said they just concentrated on the meltdowns and never mentioned any of his good points...................but....this is the Dr Phil show, like a lot of them, they purposely edit things to make it look more interesting to the casual viewer,I think it's nasty what people have said to the boys' mum on the forum, when will these people realise that everyone on the spectrum is different, and not everyone has been as academically successful or as high functioning as their child,I forget who said it on the dr phil forum, but someone accused them of being bad parents, stupid, stupid people.
Ps.
Does anyone know if it will be shown over here [UK] soon?
Have been looking at the Dr.
Shill err Phil website and its making me angry, which doesnt happen often.
I was about to go to bed, but my mother-in-law called and said, excitedly, that the show was about Asperger's today (She's really excited now that she finally knows "what's wrong" with me. But I don't want to shed her in a bad light. She loves me and she's trying to understand and I appreciate that). I don't like the Dr, she loves him.
So, I checked out his site, and now I can't sleep I'm so sad.
They just focused on the meltdowns. As I've gotten older, I've learned to cope, and don't feel as much rage as I did as a teen (hormones going crazy for everybody then). NT's get angry too. They didn't spread any awareness about it and how to love us, they just incited fear. The site, anyway. I didn't see the show yet.
Does he have a doctorate? In what? I don't know much about him. I've always found him so interested in himself and getting ratings, that I can't stand it.
Plus, and I know it's stupid, I hate how he calls himself dr. Phil, and not Dr. McGraw. It's like, "I'm here to be your friend, call me Phil. But don't forget that I'm a doctor."
Given that he does not even have a doctrate in psychology, I find it aggravating that we cannot get up on national TV and denounce him to the rest of the world.
I have a feeling that if a large group of US got on national TV to say ANYTHING, it'd be talked about on Saturday Night Live more than anywhere else...
I can't believe I supported going on the dr phil show. pah! I will never watch that show again. My Mom watched it. But it made me so mad that I left the room.
Read this.
Dr. Phil acknowledges that there are other traits of Asperger's besides rage
My Response is:
If that is so, then why is there half a show talking about just that? Hardly the most balanced protrayal of people with Asperger's Syndrome, and the most negitive view of Asperger's Possible.
I think that an AFF letter writing campain is in order.

link de-googled
he also has a message board.
Perhaps a official AFF letter is required here.
I would love to write a letter, but alas, I haven't yet seen the show. I will be watching it, but I don't know when.
I think that boy just needs to learn to be happy with himself. People have probably been prodding at him and trying to "help" him his whole life. Now he feels bad that he upsets his parents so much, but how come no body cares about his feelings? They should look at why he angry instead of just screaming at him more and scanning his brain.
Here's a gem off their forum:

Well, for starters, caps lock is about 1/3 of an inch to the left of the "A" key. But well, just the all caps typing tells you this ladies mindset.
When will people start listening to the scientists instead of the quacks.
Last night I had dinner with three neighbors, two of whom know about me, and who both saw the Dr Phil show. I didn't, since I don't have a TV. So we all got into a discussion, and the neighbor who didn't know had a ton of questions about autism--and then we got into the issue of "what is normal"? I was telling them about some of the frustration expressed on this forum about how the media portrays autism and AS. In all, it was a good conversation, and these three are definitely NTs.
Well, if airing the show promotes discussions such as this, then some good has come out of it. I think Dr Phil is sincere but also often misguided.
"Although Dr. Phil and staff did show a lot of the MELTDOWNS we did discuss how wonderful Alex can be. Alex has a heart of gold when his electrical system is not out of control. Alex not only is ASPERGER but also has ADHD and Mood Disorders. Usually an Asperger individual has multiple neurological issues and they overlap. " -the mother from the show on the messageboard.
Did they think to mention that on the show at all?! Here they are focused on meltdowns, and he has so-called Mood Disorders. The mother seems to understand the concept of comorbidity. They're presenting this to the world as "asperger's" but the mother herself admits there's more than that going on.
Some of the most beautiful weddings I've seen have not been hugely expensive and have tended to be simple but with much thought put into the vows and the venue (often a park or by the sea).
