Should Autism be Cured?
9 say yes, 2 say yes to an extent of treatment, 4 say no(including myself, so it'll be 3 really), and 1 says unsure. Out of 16 votes.
Their comments?
what kind of people would say NO?
cmon it's something that affects innocent people out there  if can be cured it would be great to see it happen.
<-- I think he might be referring to stupid people, as he runs a computer shop, and gets to see the worlds dumbest people each and every day.
People with austism anoy me.
yes. I have several family members with aspergers syndrome and they are very socially strange. They just dont get it. And people just dont get them. I understand them because I've had to deal with them for so long that Im used to how they act and think, but the average person will not be able to understand what's wrong with the person, they'll just think that they are weird. So yes, if it could be cured, I would say we should cure everybody.
Best one so far:
... i dont think there should be a cure for it - i think people just need to accept it and get on with their lives and quit thinking their life is better than everyone elses!!!!
half the time the only problem with something is people saying that there is a problem!!!!!!
famous quote:
"you know what my problem is??? I DONT HAVE A PROBLEM--- THATS MY PROBLEM!!!!!"
My reply to them all:
Mind drive said the greatest thing here.
To get the best answer, ask here. And also, are you only viewing low functioning autists here? And it only affects innocent people?
Of course, Einstein and Michelangelo were poor innocent people.
Listen, YOU ARE BORN WITH AUTISM! YOU DON'T JUST GET IT! And those of who do have it love it.
Keep educating them...(they need it!)
Will do, Amy. I've already let Gareth use my account to post his comments on it to help educate them. Was rather good, too.
Its Overclockersclub.com
Its in the members section polls.
Well, they've already accused me of trolling because of it...
I'm going off of the forums at all places for awhile. Need to calm myself down and relax out some things.
Being called a troll by peeps who support the notion that
ignorance is bliss is not something to get wound up over because they don't want to know. It might be a good idea to leave the topic alone or else you might upset them into turning against you or doing a little trolling of their own here.
Given some of their replies I'm not at all suprised that it's stressed you out

I've just posted a nice long post there

NT adding her two bits here.... You have to be fair about this guys. Autism is a huge spectrum. AS is just a tiny end of it. Even Hrick says he can understand a parent not wanting to see their child suffer... and a lot do suffer. Even Hrick will tell you, as to his end of the spectrum it is a curse to live the affects of it.... to not be able to move when you want or how you want. To have to process your environment through senses that at times provide no information, incomplete or erroneous information. How do you learn? How do you function?
I am just curious. If I said we should not seek a cure for Cerebal Palsy or MR, would you have the same reaction? How is it different? For those on the far, far end of the spectrum I would suggest there is precious little difference in the practical living of it.
Do not misunderstand me. In raising that question, I am not saying we would change it or that we agree with cure for Autism. Actually, we don't. Our answer is product of our overall spiritual philosophy. (Something I won't reiterate here. It is already out there in other posts if someone wants to find it.) I do not envy others of different belief structures for whom this question may pose a slippery slope.
I do agree some of the individual comments noted were pretty ignorant, but that is more an individual thing than an NT thing. As Hrick has said we live in a society that doesn't even value "normal" infant life, why should we think AS, or Autism generally would receive any better treatment. It is a question of humanity generally, not NTs per se.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you on something you have said here.
My child is LFA. I know he DOES NOT LOVE IT, and most likely never will.
Please consider that 'autism' can and does manifest in many varying degrees of difficulties and challenges.

Thanks for your more 'liberal' attitude. I agree with you 100% and wish I could have put my point across as eloquently as you have.

Yeah, I’d have to agree with you there Wilky; its not as simple as cure or no cure. Its about quality of life…there are situations in which a partial cure may be desirable.
Of course, this does not mean that a total cure would be desired or required; the complete loss of aspie traits from the human genome would be a profound loss to all humanity.
Thanks quickduck. My objection is not about 'cure', but I do have an issue with sweeping statements regarding autism, saying:
"And those of who do have it love it."
Surely one autistic person should not speak for all autistics?
I think that when I reflect on my little boy's future my heart is heavier in my chest. He is (despite being a lovely, intelligent and high functioning autistic boy) going to face bigger hurdles than most of his peers. I did at his age and know how the world can treat autistic kids. (I wasn't diagnosed). At the same time it has toughened me up and got me to work on my stregnths and work against my weaknesses.
One thing I have not done is get anti-NT. My girlfriend, my daughter and my best mates are NT. No one individual is representative of the whole.
I know it sucks
1. having a degree but not getting through all those damned interviews
2. having a job and not getting any woman's attention
It would make me really consider a cure, but only for me.
I'm sure it sucks too if you have something to tell someone but can't express it.

Thanks for bearing my view in mind, GuessWho.
Wilky, what does your child dislike about LFA? If you'd rather PM me, please do.
I'll PM you if that's OK.
Amen to that! LOL.
I am not a Christian and such do not live in awe and worry of an ominpotent invisible parent figure that will take me to ask if I stray. I make decent calls within the parameters of what I consider is righ or wrong. I happily live with myself and my decisions and think I am a good person for doing so.
