Hi, I just learned today that 1 million dollars was given to the Department of Mental Retardation (DMR) in my state, inorder to start an Autistic Department. Most people who have applied are ones diagnosed with AS. Thus making DMR look into an Aspergers Department. Fiscal year for them is every July.
What is the dept, and what do they do? Do they provide services?
I don't think we have anything like that in the UK.
Oh yes it provides many services....dmr works more with low IQ's but once you are tested and you don't qualify they look into other departments. The provide a scribe for those who are going to college, they help find jobs, etc.....
I live in the USA but does UK have a services for the Mentally Challenged? I know it sounds ilogical to go there, but they then direct you to the right department afterwards....Like how would I have know that they were given so much money to start a new branch.....
For example, when my daughter was still in public school and they wouldn't help me, I went to DMR (knowing full well that she wouldn't fit under their guideliness) after the test and the rejection notice, I was sent to the Autistic department who said they were working on an AS department...
So it's interesting that a long road takes you to a nice path....

Are we sure this isn't another troll from prank.org? I live in the US and never heard of a Department of Mental Retardation in any state. It almost sounds as if this person is here to make fun of us but please forgive me if I'm wrong. We do have something called ARC which stands for Association of Retarded Citizens but they never use the full name anymore.

Judging from anag's other posts, it doesnt seem likely. Can you clear up the issue of the name DMR please anag?
Oh I'm so sorry for any confussion.... I live in the State of Mass and here is one of the addresses...it is under the Commonweatlth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Health & Human Services Department of Mental Retardation DMR - Southeast Region 68 North Main Street -
Carver, MA 02330 TEL (508) 866-5000 FAX (617) 727-7822.
As I mentioned I applied for my daughter; "On the basis of your interview and information gathered from current and previous records," "does not meet the Department of Mental Retardation (DMR) criteria for developmental disabilities as established by the DMR regulations for eligibility as a child and therefore has been determinded ineligible."
They have The DMR - Autism Spectrum Division of Massachusetts and are hoping to open The DMR - Asperger department (not sure of the actual name.) w/ the million dollars.
quote the state budget cycle runs from July to June. We are pleased to annouce that the budget process for FY '06 has come to a close and $1.2 million has been appropriated to the Autism Spectrum Division. unquote
One intake co-ordinator told me since my daughter didn't qualify for dmr that I should keep close contact w/ the Autism Division because eventually they will open the Asperger Division
I wish I had a web site to give you, but these are from my personal records.
What is this prank.org? I noticed it on the forum before, so I think I will read up on them....
Again sorry for the confussion and if you need any other info, and I have it I will share...I only mentioned it so that where ever you are from and need support that maybe there is a DMR in your area and it's a start.
I found something else from their newsletter summer of 2005
"New Intake & Eligibility Process:
All children with a Persasive Developmental Disorder who have not accessed services through the Department of Mental Retardation (DMR) in the past and are interest in services with the new Autism Spectrum Division will go through an Intake & Eligibility Process specific to autism spectrum disorders.
This will also include those children with high functioning autism and Asperger's who went throught the existing DMR process for Children's Services but were found ineligible. "
It goes on to mention how to apply for the intake and that the department will not be doing testing but excepting credible or as they say "trained" professionals
Prank.org is just another one of those sites for primitive brutes who thinks that the funniest thing in the world is to insult people that they don't know. Easily recognized for their innability to actually say something that isn't ignorant, crude or plain crude. And appearantly, they sometimes crawl out from the rock that they live under and harrass us for no reason at all. But fortunatly, you're not one of them; since if you were one, you wouldn't have the ability to actually say something intelligent.
Hey thanks for the fyi on prank.org. And thanks for the nice compliment. Nope I'm just a mom w/ 14 year old daughter trying to do the right thing. Thus share what I know w/ others too. Thanks again Joel...ps I'm going to be posting my daughter's pics, as soon as I know how....
um do these prank people come over her and read up on us and then make fun of us on their web site? I mean using our info against us??
Wait that sounds famaliar. I seemed to remeber posts from bonnie regading deaths at JRC that was investigated by this dept.
