Fish, huh?

Hmm... I've always been unable to eat fish because there's a certain taste to it I find truly horrible; maybe I've got some sort of deficiency if I haven't been getting enough of that?

Can you get that same nutrient from some other source? Especially vegetable-based? (Me=poor college student... veggies are cheap...)
Whatever you think about the whole "cure autism" thing (personally I am skeptical) eating seafood IS good for brain development (omega 3) longevity, and as a preventative against thyroid disorders (iodine). Same with seaweed -- which is yummy in Japanese food especially miso and sushi and onigiri (a ball of rice with ingredients inside, sometimes wrapped in dried seaweed.) Only thing I don't like about fish consumption is that you have to be extra picky in order not to get bones. (a problem which doesn't present in either sushi, sashimi, or flake -- shark meat.)

The thing to watch out for Omega 3 supplements is if it's from a fish source to get a supplement with a "mercury free" tag.  It should be in health food stores, as it is here.

Also, there's a list of preferred fish to eat according to how much mercury contamination can be in each kind.  Women of certain years are encouraged not to ingest mercury as it could affect fetal development is they should get pregnant, yet I think everyone should be careful.  If it's not good for fetuses or infants, why anyone else?

I wish I could remember the cereal I used to get here in Wa. State that had 1500 mg of Omega 3's  in each serving.  I'll have to get back to you on that.  It was around 3.50 a box (American), and organic.  It was pretty good.

If one is leery of fish or fish oil, Graelwyn's suggestions are excellent.

Alfonzo--Can't you just swallow them, or is there a textural reason you chew them?  The capsule will digest along with everything else in your g.i. tract...Good heavens, no wonder you think they are barf!  They would be barf that way!  Literally...

Also for other sources of Omega 3's, flaxseed bread is a fairly good source, though is you have a problem with gluten, this is not a good option.  I like the Silver Hills flax bread, but I don't know what their range of distribution is.  Plus it has nuts and the wheat is sprouted, not processed---fiber!

(Would prefer to eat the real thing, though, rather than supplements.) I remember when I was younger and my mum would make us eat seaweed supplements because of the low iodine levels in the soil of Tasmania.

But seaweed tastes better than seaweed supplements. I imagine fish is the same. (Salmon... mm mmm Tongue)

Hmm, I think kids used to have to drink cod-liver oil because it was "good for them" and most of them didn't like it. Some of those vitamin tonics they used to have were quite foul-tasting and I think they would have been worse than cod-liver oil.

I don't reckon I could drink any oil straight. Anyway, I used to know some ex-vegans in Japan, who gave up being vegan because Japanese put fish oil in practically every dish. Had more raw fish and raw squid and fish oil and seaweed and octopus tentacles and sea urchins during two years in Japan than in any other two years of my life. Didn't feel any less autistic for that, though.

(Thinks: Probably should be eating more fish than I do these days, though.)

Umm, I don't like the idea of eating raw seafoods.
Had salmon tonight. (With olives and stuff) which was yummy.

Found it!

The name of the cereal that has all the Omega 3's is called Nature's Path, and depending on the variety contains 1000 to 1500 mgs of Omega 3's.

Like I said earlier, I don't know if this is sold all over the U.S. (I know it's in WA and Hawaii), but it's a good brand.

I take the fish oil and flax seed for my health (for a healthy heart, and it was advised by my opthamologist for dry eye), and if it helps my focus, great.  As for my AS, I haven't noticed a thing.  The healthier I am, the less paranoid I am, and that helps, but that's from everything I do to stay healthy.

White meat is - in many ways - more healthy than red. (And vice versa also, as in red meat has higher levels of iron.) And it's true that there are certain nutrients from sea food that cannot be found in such quantities on land. (Many of them probably neutralised by supermarket packaging. Bummer.)

I don't think that Omega 3 really works in such a way as you would really notice the effects. It's one of those things that is good for your brain, but you don't really notice the difference because you have no real experience of the alternative. "If I hadn't eaten..."

It's a little like, breast milk is supposed to improve brain development in infants. But those who weren't breast fed really can't tell if they - as individuals - would have been smarter or whatever had they been.

Personally, I believe that exercise for your brain in the form of study etc is much more effective in bringing about a noticeable difference, although of course the right nutrition helps.
Still autistic. Just healthier.
