This week national television showed a documentary on a certain substance (i think it was amino 3). Aparantly fish contains a lot of it, but now they sell it in tablets too.
According to the journalist and some doctors amino 3 (if that is the right name for it) can "cure" autism. They weren't talking about curing exactly, but of ameliorating the living standards of autists. Then they showed an autistic boy and his parents and they were overexcited about the tablets they had been giving him. They said their child became more sociable and outgoing....
How should i feel about this??  :? It made me feel rather sad and angry...
I bet they were american...
They were belgians...  Sad
Not magical, but possibly miraculous? The issue of good oils versus bad is something everyone should be aware of, for health reasons, and Omega 3 is certainly a good oil (though by no means the only route; it's a long story...)!

Too late tonight, but if I don't follow up on this in the next few days, will someone please PM to remind me? I'm surprised more people aren't clue'd up on this; believe me, you want to know about this (though it's got sod all to do with autism...)!
Omega 3, that was what they we're talking about, yes...

Maybe i misinterpreted than, but they made it look like a big hype.

I don't eat fish or meat, should i be considering picking up on eating fish again?  Smile
Well, if not, supplements...
I got myself some omega3-tablets today. I'll have to try them for 3 months to know if they have any effect. I'll tell you if they do Smile
I use an electric organiser
I tried things like that, and filofaxes, but then I forget to look in them, and just carry on with whatever my interest is, ie, on the computer, whatever.
Exactly!
I've tried things like that, and writing it on my hand, but it just seems to "disappear".
If anyone's veggie, Flax seed oil also contains the good amino acids. Omega-3 and Omega-6. Same as fish I think.
Flaxseed oil is very good, but an age related decline in one metabolic pathway requires one also to take gamma-linolenic supplements (evening primrose or starflower oil/borage) which are both expensive (borage is usually the cheapest but gets less publicity for some reason). Fish oils avoid this problems as they are further along the pathway in question (pre-formed if you like) and a meal of cold water fatty fish, twice a week, is the most economic route, but adding some flax oil to one's virgin olive is a good idea in any case, as it gives a better balance!

As to vitamins, I've got it down to a load of anti-oxidants with my first meal of the day, and a MegaMultivitamin and mineral tablet, and another half a gram of vitamin C with my evening meal (I should eat more often but this is the routine I find most comfortable). If I should happen do do something particularly dirty or strenuous, then I usually have an appropriate snack and more anti-oxidants.

Pay attention Amy! This way, any significant intake of calories is always accompanied by vitamin intake, so it's hard to forget! I'll give more details (and tips on appropriate qantities) if anyone's interested (but not tonight, I've left it to late again!).
It's worth noting that if we don't get all the nutrients we need, then we cannot possibly be on top form; we're just a bag of chemical soup really, and any missing ingredient means sub-optimal functioning. Getting the right fats and minerals etc. is important and, food alone has been shown to be inadequate by independent researchers (government scientists, on the other hand, are more interested in the welfare of the food producers and pharmaceutical companies, so they'll tell you otherwise; you decide which you want to believe!).

Just as lacking sleep, or being run-down for any reason can make one prone to depression, does't it seem probable that anything else that leads to sub-optimal performance will do the same?

This is particularly true for oils as that's what the brain is mostly composed of (so you're all fat heads Tongue ). Feeding it second rate oils will lead to second rate operation, so getting it right is a no-brainer.

alfonso, how are you taking your oil capsules? It should be with meals! If it's still a problem then consider alternatives (fish etc.) and note that flax seed oil (though it's not the tastiest) can be used in cooking, and if you use virgin olive (as you should be; "cooking oils" are a dietry disaster that no one should touch with a barge pole) then why not mix in 10% of flax oil? Other possibilities are Pumpkin seed oil (delicious; I've only found it in capsules, but I chew them) which is 15% linolenic, or walnut oil at 5%. They should be available in any good health food shop, or just eat fresh walnuts, not the preshelled ones; that bitter taste is because the unsaturated oil you're trying to obtain here has gone rancid from exposure to air, so freshness is an issue here. Don't forget to reduce other fats used, to avoid calory overload!
You can't just swallow them then. Check the "insomnia" threads for techniques to switch off your imagination prior to sleeping!
