What I find disturbing is that he claims his parents ..." took away my "herbs" my guns and my thermite (explosive)".

If this is true then his parents knew full well just how bad things were Sad

The news report  from the thread opener said:

Police did not know where Freund bought the weapon or whether it was legally purchased. They said his parents told them they had no clue he had been keeping a gun in their house.

I do not see why he would lie. I do not have enough information to say his parents lied to the police, although its hard to imagine that they would not have known there was something wrong.

They would not have lied as such, if they had taken guns away from him they could still be telling the truth, i.e. they didn't know he had a gun in the house [because they had taken his gun(s) away].

Not much of what he wrote was very coherent, so I really cannot tell whether he was telling the truth about explosives etc. But if it is true then perhaps his parents were too ashamed to get him proper help (he did make comments that implied he was under psychiatric care but he would have probably been put in a hospital if the psychiatrist knew the truth)?

That is why I said I did not have enough information. The article is far from exhaustive. By the amount information it came from a police statement.

Although thermite can be explosive in some circumstances, like flour. It has a very high boiling point and so is liquid when it reacts with it self. Its main use was welding rail tracks. It would not by most be considered explosive. I find it odd that he called thermite an explosive. But it is not enough to suggest that he did not have it.

Have you ever seen the tv show 'science abuse', it has an item on thermite every week to show how explosive it is, and how hot it burns. So it certainly could be used for nefarious purposes.
It can also be used in grenades.

Thermite Reaction

Fe2O3 + 2Al → Al2O3 + 2Fe

There is no gas released. it can heats up to 2500°C but boils at 2519°C.

If you go by the definition of an explosion being a rapid expansion of gas it in it self is not explosive. I'm not saying it can not induce other normaly inert things to explode. If some one mixed it with a substance that boiled below 2500°C than it would explode in the same way a chip pan fire does when someone throws water on it.

If you called thermite an incediary I would agree.

At least if people could be directed to a professional service that has a good chance of understanding them, and giving guidance on services, it will take the emotional pressure off members of a forum, chatroom, and if someone is serious they could contact the helpline.

One would hope... but for those that seek attention, that wouldn't solve the matter. Sad

Doesn’t someone have to seek attention to ask for help? He went the wrong way about it on WP but he was not in his right mind.  Edit: I do not think people use threats of suicide to seek attention unless they want some sort of help.

Reporting Abuse or Spam
The form below may be used to report instances of abuse or spam, however please use it only if you suspect that it originated from a BT network or customer.

Before deciding if our abuse department is the most appropriate contact, please read our Acceptable Use Policy.

If the abuse originated from somewhere other than a BT network, we would recommend that you complain directly to the ISP in question. There are web sites to help you with this, such as SamSpade, Abuse.net and SpamCop. (These links are provided for your information only - BT is not affiliated with these web sites.)

I do not know about other ISP's but BT just has methods of complaining about abuse. I think there should be something separate to report people that you think to be at risk.

I have contacted BT asking for a seperate "contact us" section to report at risk internet users. It is just one ISP but it would be interesting to see what they say.

It looks like they would take seriously this sort of thing. I wonder how common that is?
