Holy crap... Just read about it in a Norwegian newspaper. If the *** hits the fan and it becomes public that Freund was an Aspie, we'll all be "outed" as homocidal maniacs!
Clearly the adminstrator(s) of WP should have done something. This is akin to a kid coming to school, annnoucing a shooting, and the principal doing nothing! Amy, I hope you are much more responsible in reconzing a dangerous situation.
I think somebody should report it before banning them, authorities need to know about this kind of thing.

While some tried to urge him to talk to his parents, or dial 911 when he made a suicide threat, one person actually posted this to him on a thread where he states he is suicidal -

Suicide's the latest craze. Personally, I recommend you jump on the bandwagon without delay!
Kill yourself somewhere where lots of people will see you then. You won't be anonymous anymore! You'll be in the local newspapers the next day!

Why on earth would someone not take suicide threats seriously? that sickens me that some people do that.  The poster should have took note of others and took it seriously

Want to know why he was not taken seriously by some? He was making demands for free money, posting up paypal to try to get people to give him money and such and saying he'd post the threat to other websites as well. His first posts were more 'trollish' like than anything and for those that are cynical about things online, we act as such to protect the community. He was given many references to where to get help, he chose not to take it.

That contradiction is in fact most disturbing. Do the authorities know about his posts at wrongplanet?

They sure do thanks to Ante (AntiEverything) who copied them all and sent them to the media before discussing with the moderators the best plan of action and now WrongPlanet has made one of the latest articles about the case. What Ante did was a breech of privacy of the community which I don't agree with and now the community will face people lurking reading things and getting false impressions of Aspies.

Cat, not much could have been done, they tried to track his family down only to find about 30-50 people with the last name Freund in the kid's area.

People would not ask the isp for information, they would contact the isp and inform them of the situation and ask if the police or relatives could be notified. An isp would not give out any information to a random person who contacted them.

They'd need likely a warrant to obtain such information, there is very little that even the ISP can tell about a person. Unfortunately the worst place to post suicide/death threats is on the net because it allows too much potential for lies, anonymity and such. Very little can be done when that young man seemed set on what he was going to do despite people giving him good advice to get help. He was bent on destroying himself and others and accomplished that and often unless a person wants help truly, they'll keep destroying themselves.

One of his demands in his original 'Suicide Threat' post on WP was 'free money', 'help with getting meds', etc. It was at the top of the first page where he also threatened to post it to other forums as well like he was trying to blackmail and there was supposedly another thread where he was asking people to paypal him money. All those threads likely have been moved to the global moderator's forum by now.

That article was largely based on interviews with the owners of the site, only willfreund's quotes were taken from the forum AFAIK.

Well Wrongplanet had to make a statement after Ante (AntiEverything) copied all the posts and sent them to the media without consulting with the site admin and all. Who says now they won't go signing up for the forum lurking for any other nonsense they can find to try to link to the whole situation... they could surely make an easy unfortunately link to us being sexual deviants if they had access to the mature asperger's forum. Ugh... it's the point that privacy of the people on the forum was breeched by a user without consulting the site admin who should have been the one to handle things prior to that.

I have contacted CAN on a long shot that they might consider funding or partly funding a crisis line.
We could also try NAS and other large groups that get many donations.

I agree but it doesn't mean it'll stop these people from making suicide threats on the net and not really wanting help but seeking attention... there will always be some that are like that.

At least if people could be directed to a professional service that has a good chance of understanding them, and giving guidance on services, it will take the emotional pressure off members of a forum, chatroom, and if someone is serious they could contact the helpline.

One would hope... but for those that seek attention, that wouldn't solve the matter. Sad

Doesn’t someone have to seek attention to ask for help? He went the wrong way about it on WP but he was not in his right mind.  Edit: I do not think people use threats of suicide to seek attention unless they want some sort of help.

Unfortunately I've ran across a few that did that just to get center of attention and thought it was a joke to do it. People can be rather stupid at times.

Nice. Now they risk getting all sorts of crazy nt's there...
:?
Good job with the interview, Jerry, making it clear that people shouldn't associate Asperger's with violence.
