While browsing the DVLA website I noticed that they class AS as a behavioural problem. This is somewhat concerning me. Does anyone else here in the UK have a driving license and an official diagnosis?
The thing i'm concerned with is the diagnosis being used against me even if I am capable of driving safely.
He's clearly watching the road and has both paws on the wheel! Its just unfair to stop him from driving. Hes not a disabled dog.
That movie portrayed meow-mows as evil

This is the conflict, as aspergers is not automatically classed as a disability, yet it is for some things. If you needed help and asked social services or some other agency in the UK you would actively have to prove you were disabled to get help.
Having an AS dx does not qualify you for help, and for most people its very difficult to get help.
I have just called the DVLA, I have been informed that it should not affect my license so long as the doctor is alright with me driving. I have also been given contact details for someone to complain to regarding the incorrect classification on the website.
I've been working towards my driver's license and I'm pretty comfortable in traffic, except parking is where I have problems. Insurance is required by law as well, but if you've had no accidents or tickets, my rate won't be that huge.
As far as I know, in my state, if you have epilepsy, you have to be seziure-free for 6 months before you can drive. Also, your doctor is required by law to notify the DMV of any seziures and the license is temporarily suspended due to medical issues until you're seizure-free again. My brother has epilepsy after a head injury from an accident where he was a passenger, so that's how I know so much about that condition and the law. Even though I had epilepsy as an infant which caused my Asperger's, I've been seizure-free since I was about 2. My driving won't be affected as I don't have the diagnosis of epilepsy. My brother's insurance rate would only be affected if he had an accident or some tickets on his record.
As far as Asperger's goes, it's not always regognized as a disability, in fact there's a Regional Center that is facing a class-action lawsuit as they refuse to help children with Asperger's as it's not as severe as autism is. I do have an official diagnosis, but I don't disclose it as there is still discrimination going on. My driving ability is in no way affected by my Aspieness as it's just a personality trait and I no longer have seziures.
What about sending a FOIA request to the DVLA and asking how they came to the decission to make it a notifiable condition?
Anybody have any suggestion as to what should be included?
Android
I may just do this
However, people with an official diagnosis, should declare it.
Ive been driving for 6-7 years and never had to declare im asperger to them
"Normies love statistics."
Oh please! A lot of aspies are interested in statistics too, more so that the average NT.
Lazarus, you do need to declare it, you don't want to have problems with your insurance company if you have an accident. The DVLA do require that they are informed.

I have been involved in an accident before were a woman scraped my drivers side of my old Fiat punto. I had to goto court and everything and eventually won. My being diagnosed with AS was never an issue
The DVLA have never told me i should declare I have aspergers syndrome to them and therefore I feel no need to tell them supringly enough.
After my trouble with hertfordshire uni you can hardly expect me to be so forthcoming with my disclosure can you
But they do ask questions about it on the form and website.
Oh well I wouldn't tell an insurance company there not going to consult the person who diagnosed me before they give me insurance
