I had a job interview this week. It was mentioned that some of the workers start at 6 am. Do people actually like to start work this early? I was guessing that because many are immigrants, that they start work early because they are working at other jobs in the evening. So why doesn't the company just pay more? I think they would get better quality work that way.
Sometimes my work starts at 5:30 (I work in the bakery and deli of a grocery store). I like the early shift, and in my department, the early shifts are coveted and reserved for those with more seniority or who work harder. If you are new or have been lazy or are being punished, the switch you to closing: 11:30- 8 PM. In the main store, the closing shift is even later, after 10:00, and people really gripe about that.
I am not really a morning person, but the store is quieter at an early hour, and I have something left of my day to do things when I get off work. Speaking of which, I start at 8 AM today and have to run now!!
I start work at 6-7am, depending what day.
I like working early before the customers come in.
It's also nice when you get to go home in the early afternoon.
This job is in a laboratory so there is really no customers. I can see a reason for some businesses to open early. There is no reason that this place is open so early except that maybe some employees prefer it.
Maybe some people just like getting to work early and leaving earlier. I just have a huge problem with my husband who does not like to get up early. Also I live too far away to get there that early. I guess they are not going to hire me.
Do they operate a shift system? If so then the reason for starting early is that they can keep the equipment in their laboratories operating for longer: this enables them to use the same amount of fixed capital (equipment and premises) to make profit from twice as many workers. If you find getting up and getting to work early difficult, why don't you try to get a job on the late shift.
No they only work days. They told me that some people start at 6 am, some 7am, some 8 am. I assume the office staff work 9-5 pm. I think the time worked only depends on whether it is team work related or not. Otherwise why would if matter what hours one keep? Only for safety reasons there should be two people in the laboratory at all times.
The problem is that I live far away and do not have a car. I have to take public transit. It could take me 1.5 hours to get to work. If I missed a bus or train connection I could be 20 minutes to 30 minutes late. Also some of the bus routes do not start running until 7 am. My husband says now I am getting unduly upset about bus schedules.
I am already at a disadvantage because the person interviewing was sick and someone else interviewed me. I will just wait until they call me to offer the job or tell me they have hired someone else.
