Hello there, my name is Karen..my 6 year old son was diagnosed with autism when he was approx 18 months old. He displayed all the "usual" characteristics...lost speech, liked to spin anything he could get his hands on, etc. I have had continuous therapy for Zachary since I discovered he was autistic and he has really thrived! He's a sensitive, loving boy, and I have always felt lucky to have had him just the way he is. I dont consider him disabled and have never thought of him to have lower intelligence. He has shown a great interest in numbers and letters and reads at a higher level than all the children in his kindergarten class..approx 2nd grade level!
I have always been interested in understanding how he perceives the world around him. I figure he just sees things a little different than me, but that can be an advantage!
He loves to be hugged, touched, tickled, kissed, and he has great eye contact.
I am so happy to have found this community; I look forward to talking and learning from all of you.
Hi Karen, welcome to AFF.
He sure sounds like a wonderful boy, karenB! One of the most wonderful things with this site is that I'm so happy to see all these proud parents who not only accept their children for being who they are, but even being proud of them. It might sound odd, but far too many parents to aspie and/or autistic children sees their children as dissapointments, which is pretty horrible. Keep up being proud and supportive of your son, Karen, it's the best gift that a child can ever get.
... and then some of us haven't found a husband yet

but are dying to have children (even if they were special needs it doesn't matter)
