I've been thinking what it would be like to have my own internet radiostation. That would be so much fun. I spent hours playing dj for myself, so why not do it on the internet?
But then i must say i'm a real fool when it comes down to working with computers, so i really don't know where to start. And i was also wondering about the cost. Considering copyright and stuff like that. Should i just risk to play me (illegally) downloaded music out in the open or will i be caught for sure? It's not that i would be playing Britney Spears or Limp Bizkit or things like that, it would be underground music mainly.
Any thoughts on this?
Can't help with the practical issues, but I think it would be a great idea if you can swing it!
I appreciate you want to play your own choices, but I think it would also be very useful to play those recomendations in the "what are you listenning to" threads on the various Aspie sites (there's one on Island of Aspergia for example:
http://www.musicmademe.com/asp/viewtopic.php?t=305 )
I like to read such threads, but it does get frustrating when a lot of people recommend a song or group I've never heard! If you can set up some kind of inter-Aspie Kazaa (without the viruses) I'd be happy to contribute, as I have a vast collection, including a lot of good stuff many will never have heard.
Soulseek looks useful, thanks for the tip! As for all of us contributing our favourites to a monstrous on-line juke box, how difficult would that be to set up Gareth? I know a lot of us are music nuts; I should imagine quite a few could contribute their own performances (or remakes of classics...)!
if anyone has a very beefy server running unix/linux and they're willing i could help them set it up for audio streaming
Never mind alfonzo; at least we know it's possible now! Am I right in thinking a "beefy" server doesn't need to be super-fast, but just needs lots of disc space? If so, anyone with a little money could set it up (in fact the Box could well turn out to be more expensive than the hard discs!); regrettebly, I don't currently have even "a little" spare cash!
Did you get anywhere with having your own internet radio Alfonzo?
a streaming audio server needs to be fast
and all the media needs a source:
lots of disk space and/or CD drive with realtime encoding etc
and BANDWIDTH
streaming audio can easily take up at least 50kbps or so per user
p.s
if you can arrange for a server i'll help you to configure it for audio streaming
If you get yourself a broadband connection, a router and a decent fast machine then install linux on it then all is good
a cable connection might do for a small number of users
as far as i know a cable connection only goes up to 1.5mbps at most. to support a decent number of users you should have at least 10mbps
contact your cable company and ask them if they do a business package - note that you need the same amount of upstream as downstream.
tis about £19.99 monthly on average for a decent broadband connection here
you need to find a different ISP, one that offers SDSL rather then just ADSL
or you could co-locate in a data centre
I've got 512 for 15€ per month (20 € for a mega) so yours still seems expensive alphonso! Try shopping around, and check out special offers; bandwidth shouldn't be a problem where you live.
