On the other hand, what is amusing once or twice can get very tedious after 10 times.

I had several people at my volunteer job come up to me and say "I am sorry that you have brain damage."

If I had been in your place, I would have demanded an explanation of why they said that.  And then I would have found a better place to volunteer.

And no, I don't think you're being paranoid at all.  One person making a rude comment like that could just be a random jerk, but when several people do it, you can be sure they're all talking about you behind your back.

Well his name means Asparagus. So if you live in some countries in europe you would have 'Asparagus syndrome'.  :?
golly I never knew that, Amy!

Dr Asparagus sounds vaguely plausible, but what about his assistant Dr Melted-Butter?

- JFK, to the best of my recollection...
I have a mug that says;  "I know what my problem is!  Whats yours?"

And I drink from it with great pride!

Weirdness is what separates us from the regulars. .

Wouldn't it be more correct to say that our difference is perceived as "weirdness" by unhelpful individuals?

Stella

When NTs say that an autistic person is "weird" I doubt that they intend the more flattering constructions your dictionary has placed upon it. They mean "odd" as in "She's a bit odd" - which is not a positive evaluation of a person   in vernacular British English.

Was it a Which Consumer report?

With a mother like that, I'd quit drinking!   Anyway, I have now lost 2 "close" friends because of my disclosure/coming out!!!  Guess they weren't really that close!  If thats what they want, FINE, I'm too old to play the game any more!!!!  I thought they accepted me as I accepted them.  Guess the facts are more than they could handle, I don't fit in their superficial worlds!!   :?  I haven't changed, it's just that I now have a "LABEL"!  Unclean, unclean!!!

Peace :?:

Responses I've had along the lines of:  "You can't have asperger's because..."

1.  You're not like Temple Grandin.
2.  You're not withdrawn enough.
3.  You seem like you're pretty organized.
4.  You get along with people okay.
5.  You do pretty well in conversations with people.

Lots of educating to do, eh?

Haha Oh boy I know that feeling

I remember someone who represented some asperger action group in hertfordshire asked if she could talk to me one time to my mother and my mum said yeah sure where are you he can drive to see you after his work and this persons response was "OMG He can drive and he works"   I found that quite amusing some people really do think were head cripples or something

One of the most interesting criticisms of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual that I have read pointed out that the first edition, in, I think, 1952, listed only 16 distinct clinical categories of mental illness. Four editions later, it now lists more than 350 distinct disorders  :!:  It seems that there is now no area of socially undesirable conduct or ideation that has not been pathologized and claimed for the domain of American psychiatry.

One cannot help but think of the former Soviet Union, where political dissent was genuinely believed to be a psychiatric disorder (often "sluggish schizophrenia") by some Soviet clinicians at the time.

Nah the way to look at it is  you have alot of psychologists and psychiatrists who are selfish career minded individuals who want to make a name for themselves and the best way of doing it is getting a syndrome with your name on it. Thats really the primary motivation.

Otherwise psychology defines disorders by the standards by which a society defines deviant behaviour.

I think we all know deep down that psychology is flawed. Even sociologists can criticise it and they can't even agree to disagree

Which post are you quoting from?
I bet that was annoying, at least its a change from 'You must be like Rainman'.
