Every member of this forum (792 at time of writing this) should send in a complaint to ITV.  Maybe then some action will be taken in the future (i.e. better portrayal of Aspies).

I have no desire to do so.  I have only three issues having watched the programme.

1 - The green room discontinuity bothered me,
2 - It was rather dull and a poor attempt at a British Perry Mason, and
3 - It made me watch ITV.

One of the comments on this thread was "how dare anyone say my husband or children are potential murderers" but everyone is a potential murderer whether they have AS or not.  Personally I dislike the idea that any particular section of society should be treated in a special kind of way.

While people in various social groups may not like to think that people with their race, religion, sexuality, syndrome, disability, illness etc. would never do anything bad and should never be portrayed as such I know that I myself would like to be treated as a person and not as a thing that should be patronized.

Personally I found the dialog to explain most of the things that people are complaining about and it did not leave me with any of the negative impressions that others on this thread have received.  What a lot of people seem not to be understanding is that the programme is a crime drama and it is therefore about the crime and not about Daniel or AS.  For example, showing flashbacks to the similar act would have had no baring on the narrative and would have been a distraction from the story.  (Which incidentally is also how I felt about all of the character driven elements about the barristers but maybe that is of more interest if you watch the whole series rather than an individual episode).

If there was one complaint I would make about the portrayal of AS it is simply that it did not make it clear that it is a spectrum and that different people are affected in different ways to different degrees, though that is not something that had no relevance within the story.

Well that was only my first post and I have already managed to disagree with everyone.

Amy, maybe you prefer to be thought of as a different species but I am a human and would rather be treated like one, for all the positives and negatives that that entails.  It greatly annoys me when people talk down to different groups in society like they need special treatment, personally I would like to be treated as an equal.  I have a lot of respect for those who can portray characters with AS, for example, as people and not as tokens.

This thread does make me feel like I saw a different programme to everyone else because in the one I watched Daniel was not violent to his mother at all.  He was sympathetic towards her and tried to comfort her, unfortunately in a way which accidentally caused her death.

Michael.
Asking the NAS to comment would be a good step. I don't know if they advised in the shows construction or if the help line was just an add on. It would be interesting to know if anyone from the NAS viewed the show before it was aired.
