Full Version: Rant About Apostrophes

I try to look at these forums every day, like I do with the forums I'm part of. There's something I've noticed that has come up very often and is annoying me just a little bit.

Call me a spelling nazi, but the plural of NT is NTs! Why does everyone insist that there should be a completely useless and unnecessary apostrophe in there! Is it for decoration or something?

I did a search for NT's to see how often this load of rubbish was being used.

It found 112 matches. Now that doesn't mean there are truely that many instances of the stupid mistake, as someone may be correctly using it, for example:
- When something is being implied to belong to the NT.
- An implication that a letter is missing, eg. NT is becomes NT's

But most are used when it is merely a plural.

Do: NTs are a neurological variant.
Don't: NT's are a neurological variant.

Why? Because when read, it says: NT is are a neurological variant.

Does that make a damn bit of sense to you? No! So why do you keep using it!

That rant is from your AS red dragon, Raeth and that is all he has to say about that.  Big Grin
Do they deserve such grammatical acknowledgement?

I still prefer to use NT's

Not like that!

Well, sometimes...

insinuating that other Aspies are stupid for one little apostrophe. Wink

When did I do that?

I'm letting off steam and enlightening those who didn't realise they were making the mistake. If you want to spell it like that, all the better for you!

I know it's a little off-topic but what is the proportion of Aspies with dyslexia percentage wise?

Quote:
Everyone is entitled to let of steam but to point out to people that they are making mistakes is neither courteous or fair. I'm sure you have a number of annoying little habits but accepting everyone as they are apostrophe is and all is or at least I thought it was the ethos of AFF.

Sure, everyone has their little annoying tendancies, but the reason I pointed this out was because just about everyone was doing it, and not just here either. Everywhere I look on the net, people skewer their plurals.

I never called aspies stupid, I was calling the mistake stupid. It's the same difference between hating someone, and hating what that someone does. It's not the same thing.

Were you aware of the fact that a large proportion of the AS population also has Dyslexia?

I honestly had no idea. I also didn't know it made people stick random apostrophes in their words.

Quote:
Actually Raeth, after doing some research myself you could fall into the category of hyperlexic, which is also common in people with AS. You can find hyperlexia on the net as well but don't take the indicators literally, it's like everything else individuals aren't text book cases

Looking at the general characteristics, I must say I think I'm just a good speller. Smile

You think I might be hyperlexic because I can spell reasonably? My grammar is hardly excellent...

WOW! Thanks for your answer davixen  Big Grin
My son and I have hyperlexia. Personally I love it, and so does he.
If someone makes a typo, or grammatical error it can stick out like a sore thumb, but I do make my own mistakes sometimes anyway.
So if you use an apostrophe to signify an acronym you only need one at the end, yet if you use periods, you need one after every word?

So by Dr Wood's explanation, both N.T. and NT' are correct ways of denoting an acronym?
I would say by Dr.Woods reasoning that N.T. would be correct and NT's, but not NT' . (Or we could just say other people).
Please dont make that your last post Debs.
I't doe'sn't reall'y matter' wher'e the si'lly thing's do or do'nt go' !!!!
Meow to that!
People seem to use both versions, but technically, and in medical references, Asperger's Syndrome is used, with capitals, as its a name, and with the apostrophe as its the sydrome that Asperger discovered.
Personally I dont mind if people make typos, errors etc, It does stand out, but I can cope with it.
You are doing extremely well with your english from what I can see.
