heh, I wondered why it's complaining about timestamps being in the future

Are they going to be releasing a fix in the form of a firmware update? There's rumours about removing OtherOS in the next update Sad
They already did in the slim, and this rumour came from a yellow dog executive who posted on a mailing list having heard from a source in sony.

Not exactly iron-clad scientific knowledge, but it seems possible. The reason of course would be in response to the recent geohot exploit, and to lower the cost of maintaining the hypervisor.
It's the same firmware image for both, so really the only cost saving they could have would be loss-mitigation for people who buy lots of PS3s for clusters, but no games.
heh, apparently this issue is a software one - my PS3 has been booted into linux the whole time and is showing the date just fine

I believe that they removed a part of the hardware to do with the hypervisor with the slim - don't quote me on that though.

What would that be then?
There's various levels in the PS3:

Low-level bootloader - to the best of my knowledge, this is burnt into a chip and can not be replaced(lv0)
Hypervisor - Acts almost like the BIOS on a PC, interfaces the hardware with the OS (GameOS or OtherOS) - can be reflashed by the GameOS, but must be signed - can be configured to enable/disable hardware features and do other kinds of restrictions (lv1)
GameOS/OtherOS - you know this Wink runs at lv2, no direct hardware access
You could also consider games to run at lv3

The same mechanisms that enable secure booting of GameOS are used to securely boot OtherOS - just with a different configuration. In the slim, the hardware changed slightly so the interface presented to GameOS had to be updated, but sony did not want to update it for OtherOS.

Hey, don't ask me, I'm going on fuzzy memory here Tongue

...ok, sorry, got it the wrong way around - they'd have needed to create new drivers, and there was a security concern about using OtherOS to gain control of the Hypervisor - which ended up happening. So yes, they may remove it, since it's now a vector of attack and allows for playing of pirate and backup discs.

Except now it leads to crazies like me doing stuff like this:
http://mrsun.garethnelson.com/test.pkg

Just got to figure out a way to install it..........

Anyone got a bluray press machine?

No, it's a package file containing an ftpd which can run on the PS3 granting access to the filesystem.

Getting PKG files from the PSN is trivial and not that impressive
By the way, if you know anyone with older firmware who can test that for me with the PS3Proxy trick, please ask them to do so

ooh, shiny.

Out of interest, don't suppose you know what filesystem the PS3 GameOS uses?

From what I know, it's an encrypted FFS

But encrypted, hence you can't just stick it into your desktop machine and fiddle. If the encryption wasn't present, you could stick it into your desktop, copy a few programs onto it, stick it back into your PS3 and be ready to go.
Let's see if I can have a go at repacking a PUP.......

There's an SHA1 hash in the file, so in theory I could modify it and then update that hash
Result: It's not an SHA1, it's some proprietary sony hash

People with borked PS3s, they should have been working properly as of an hour or so ago.

I tested mine in GameOS just after midnight, it had the date wrong (oddly linux kept the date fine, and at shutdown it does attempt to set the hardware clock - thus proving it's a GameOS bug and not hardware), after setting the date properly all was fine.

oh hey I wanted to mention in this thread that Blu-ray burners are available.
There's a nice shiny LG one from NewEgg in my system right now.
Somewhat cheap, too.
Now, if that'll work for what you're looking to do, I dunno.  Just thought I'd toss that out there.

How much?
Bluray discs are rather pricey right now too, and I did say "presser" as I do not believe the PS3 would boot from a burnt disc.
