can you post a screenshot of the error and post it for us to try to review? naturally i can't imagine whats wrong without seeing it...

it could just be a word or it could be a specific software error code with a string like this

Fatal Exception
X2L90283:9090 in whatever.dll  which could just mean needing to download a replacement file

Marcia like you said it is probably time to crank the car and carry it to Ye Old Fix-It shop.

Sad but these things happen......
you havent got your netbook yet?

...then paste it into Paint.

two options.

press Windows Key + R,
type in cmd,
hit enter
type in

Code:
chkdsk c:

hit enter
wait.

OR

My Computer,
right click C drive,
Properties,
Tools,
Error Checking section, Check Now
Click first box
Start button.
You may get a warning about "exclusive access", click Yes and reboot.

Don't count on the machine being usable til it's done - the second is more likely to work.

Oh yeah, and from the error, your laptop is a Dell Latitude, amirite?

Marcia Wrote:
Latitude D531.  Is that significant?

Yes - only Dell Latitudes are affected by this error, from what I can see.

Update Windows - it's a known exploit that has been fixed.

When I click on Windows Update it gives me the same message.

Follow the steps above, then try it.

"turn the computer off and on again".

good one!

hurtsnothing to let your scans currently running to finish. As Pikajedi says chkdsk will take a while

All hail Pika!!!

The second option worked!

Thanks to all who offered ideas and suggestions. Smile

Now; Update Windows, download the free version of Malwarebytes and let it run.

On the other hand having 1 or 5 different anti-malware programs, an updated anti- virus, access to security and hot fixes from windowz update. having access to system toolz such as disk clean-up. defrag, and chkdsk. All this doesnt do a bit of good if one doesnt pay attention and run the programs manually (if they are not set to run automatically) and on a regular basis.

All the best advice in the world does no good if it is not heeded.

Pay attention to your computers!

Yes, point taken. Smile  I do need to take much better care of my laptop.  Problem is, when I try to do anything it always gives me what seem to me to be dire warnings and then I don't do anything in case I muck it all up. Sad

Does your laptop come with a preinstalled backup program? to click one button and backup your saved documents, music, pictures etc.... just in case something catastrophic should happen?
