Hello everyone who is wondering about the impact of the upcomming movie "Mozart and the Whale". I speculate that when this movie comes to theaters, it will be this movie shaping public opinion about Asperger- and that of teachers, administrators, doctors.. everyone who is not already familiar with Asperger. Like Rain Main had a huge impact making autism a topic, so might Mozart and the Whale with Asperger.

I say better be prepared for lots more people trying to find out what Asperger and the movie is all about. I say lets prepare comments on the movie, and write letters and comments to movie reviews in papers and magazines who shape public opinion. Lets not leave this to the marketing deparmtent of that company.

For example, the official movie website of that movie already hosts a linkpage with a list of various Autism organisations, AFF is not among them. But it should. Someone should write them a letter, aksing to be added to the list.

And come with your own ideas how to use the momentum that may come with millions of people around the world watching that movie.
Well the movie is based on Jerry Newport's life and he is a member here, its hard to predict how much impact the movie will have for the media.
Will aspergers just be a flavour of the month for them?
Will it have long reaching effects?

In my opinion, however good or bad, how ever right or wrong, however what the movie will say about Asperger, it potentially will be the biggest thing influencing a very wide public opinion. And we might wantto be aware of that.

Very good. Should probably have a link to the official site though.
The official site is down and has been for days.
I fear that "too many" suddenly are going to "get/have" Asperger's after this movie is released, I fear it will be to "chic".
Yeah it is a worry of a 'flavour of the month' thing.
On the other hand, maybe it will help some people who are un-diagnosed and never knew aspergers existed.
You could ask Jerry Newport, a member here, who the film is about.
But the site is run by the film company, and I suppose they choose who they prefer.
The film is loosely based on the first year of my relationship with Mary. The flashbacks are right on target for both of us and much of the script is too. There are some diversions but not unrealistic ones. The male lead is a younger version of me when I was almost as skinny as Josh Hartnett but shorter. The female lead is closer to the way Mary looked when I met her.

The best thing is that there is a group which is diverse in the presentation of aspergers and autism and ethnically diverse as well.

But still, it's all good.

I agree. It is a much more realistic portrayal than "Rain Man." More people, more variety of autism expression. I also don't think that it will inspire the same kind of misleading books that "Rain Man" did. I must say that while I didn't learn much of autism, the Donna Williams books were a bargain; between Donna, Carol and Willy, three life storys for the price of one.

Yeah. When Finding Nemo came out everyone wanted a clownfish, didn't they?

Then just think of the benefits, everyone will want their very own aspie Wink

Well, they can't have mine, I'm really quite attached to him!

With regard to the movie, I'm dying of curiousity. I am a little sceptical about the idea of NT actors trying to do aspie body language and voices etc. I believe Dustin Hoffman spent time observing at least one real autistic person for his famous role.

Then just think of the benefits, everyone will want their very own aspie Wink - The whole "getting a girlfriend" problem solved in one fell swoop.

Nice idea, but pretty unrealistic... :?  :?
As for me......I'm spoken for!!!!!    I ain't nobodies token!!!

Peace
I've been a bit scared that this movie could redicule stimming and other more "intimate" things that are important to us.
I also read an interview with the director, Petter Nęss, who's Norwegian. He said that they have a problem in finding a distributor in the U.S.
