I can't wait for this movie to be released.
On a related note, has anyone read Steve Martin's novella Shopgirl? It's also being released as a film - on October 21st.
Steve Martin wrote the screenplay and plays Ray, one of the main character Mirabelle's (Clare Danes) romantic interests. After reading the book, I came away convinced that Mirabelle's other romantic interest Jeremy (Jason Schwartzman) could certainly be an aspie, though never identified as such in the book.
Anyone?
I can't wait to see it. I read some info about autism a while back when someone suggested I may be autistic but I couldn't relate to the clinical terms and the description of how NTs see us so I concluded I didn't have it. It was only in making friends with an autistic when an amazing feeling of 'I'm home' came over me and then reading accounts from other autistics and Aspies that I knew that's what I was. I am so thankful and relieved after all these years of being alone. I feel like a knew person. I hope this movie does the same for others, when they recognize what they are. My husband, an NT, has an ability to spot an autistic or aspie by talking to them and he says there's a lot of them everywhere. I'm starting to see some, one at work in fact! So I'm really glad about this. If some want to be one because it's chic, great, at least it's positive. (But look out for a positive shift towards us--with that will come the ugly jealousy that NTs possess (my least favorite quality/emotion of theirs) That could be worse than bullying or being ignored.)
The site is back up. However, it seems they link to CAN on their links list. Can anything be done about this?
Yeah. When Finding Nemo came out everyone wanted a clownfish, didn't they? brace for a backlash after all the positive publicity. Then again it depends on how well the film does/ how much it's promoted (sorry if i missed this but when is the US release again?). Thought josh harnett will probably be quite a big pull...
But still, it's all good.
Yeah. When Finding Nemo came out everyone wanted a clownfish, didn't they?
Then just think of the benefits, everyone will want their very own aspie
- The whole "getting a girlfriend" problem solved in one fell swoop. :o j/k
Any publicity is good publicity, even if it's misrepresented in the film just people hearing the name will bring it public awareness, and with awareness comes change.
With regard to the movie, I'm dying of curiousity. I am a little sceptical about the idea of NT actors trying to do aspie body language and voices etc. I believe Dustin Hoffman spent time observing at least one real autistic person for his famous role.[/quote]
Dustin Hoffman mainly observed tapes of Joe Sullivan, an autistic savant who lives in West Virginia, son of Ruth Sullivan, co-founder of ASA.
Most of the actors in MATW spent time with members of my original support group. They also met some teens in Spokane and traveled to a support group in Idaho.
BTW, "Rain Man" hired Temple Grandin to coach Dustin Hoffman. This movie had me and several of my peers do that unofficially. I think there is possibly some over-acting in the result but it is all stuff I have seem some ASD people do. Overall, the NT actors did very well and I don't think all of them were NT either. Neither do they!
