They classify us, we classify them. Put every single characteristic of every idiot scum neurotypical that you have ever met on here, as a way to relieve stress and share common hatreds. I also have the poll up, those are all my noticings.
Ignorance takes the early lead, how am I not shocked!
I'm not voting in this poll because my purpose in being a member of AFF is to improve understanding and tolerance, not to "share common hatreds."

Those responsible for the classifying of autistics are a very small number of psychologists who have a financial interest in doing so.  They do not represent the views of the entire non-autistic population (most of whom aren't even familiar with the classifications).

Yeah, I've got to agree with this quote.  I get really frustrated too Subatai_Baadur, especially when I'm misunderstood or treated badly for no apparent reason, but I refuse to do anything to someone just because it's been done to me.  Besides, there are some NT's (such as my oldest son and youngest grandson) I love dearly/fiercely.

As for "slutiness" this seems to be a sexist category as I've never heard men called sluts, so I really don't like this label at all.

Venting about mistreament is very good but hatred hurts more than it helps.  I'd rather pursue more constructive ways to use up my anger, like dancing, stimming or drawing.

Believe me, everyone better beware if I'm mad when I clean.
When I'm angry....I could scrub the porcelain off of a sink!

Ignorance is not an excuse, the fact that most people aren't familiar with us is almost as bad as those who hate us. I have met one nice NT who was a social, usual NT, but was very nice. I will admit that there are numerous NT's who do not fit any of these catagories, but they are not prevelent in any community(or none that I have seen). The slutiness catagory, however, I realize in retrospect is sexist. A mod can come by and delete that part, or you can just ignore it.
Subatai_Baadur,  I just don't give much regard anymore to what bigoted neurotypicals think about what I say, how I act, what I wear or look like or even how I do things different from the way they do.  Their opinion just doesn't mean squat to me.  They don't know me nor do they understand me, so why would I give them the satisfaction of thinking that I would change one thing about me for their approval?

Granted, it is harder to have this type of an attitude when you are young and still in school.  I mean, it's really hard to navigate through the school system when everything is set up just for one type of student, let alone try to assert your individuality and stay out of the way of those that hate simply because they see you as different.

Many neurotypicals talk alot about individuality, and then conform to the latest fads and mannerisms and styles (even opinions) that their peers have - where's the individuality in that?

I understand what you're saying when you say that ignorance is not an excuse.   Indifference does seem to me, to be worse that being hated, at least an emotion is in play with being hated.

Everyone knows how they'd like to be treated and so they should just treat others like they like to be treated...a "golden rule" type of thing.

I don't care if they like me, just don't disrespect me or look down at me because I'm different.  If you can't do that much, then I wish they'd just get out of my way.

I do care alot for many neurologically different (NT's) people but I have no patience for those that hate me just because I don't march in step with the herd.
Subatai_Baduur without spelling it out to you I'd highly recommend you go and see or rent a French Film called La Haine (HATE) directed by Matthieu Kassovitz as soon as you can. While watching it I'd recommend you think of the police as ( I hate using this term!) NT's and the people in the slums including the main characters as aspies.
Well, might it come to your mind, that we (aspies in general) show the same ignorance if we don't take/accept NT's as they are?

It's just, if they don't know about Aspergers - tell them, explain to them and wait if they show any reaction. And try to explain in a nice way - nobody likes to be "attacked" by the explanations why you are as you are. (Just think the other way round, a NT telling you in aggressive voice: "How should I know you were AS when you did not tell me?")

I found out that a lot of people were astonished to hear that something like a high funcioning or an asperger autist exists. Because of thinking aspies are just like them, we seem to them very rude, not showing enough affection, not being as socializing and stuff. We are offending them as they are offending us and as we react, they do as well.

I refuse to think that NT's are all bad and that everyone on the autistic spectrum is good! Yes, it's much easier to put everybody and everything into a good-bad drawer, but in this world exist a lot of shades of grey as well, one should never forget. Even if some people do not act very nice in one way (like destroying nature, throwing rubbish into the woods and so on), they can be very nice with kids or with other people. There's no such thing as the "perfect human".

Sibylle (not perfect, but nearly   )
A)Grey is confusing. I like my method
B)When I told people at school that I had AS, they didn't believe me because I wasn't mentally retarded
C)They don't get out of my way. I'm constantly forced to work with and help NT's who are social idiots.

Grey is reality - ignoring it does not help. Your method may be easier for you (or any aspie), but it is kind of escape from reality. For me I found out, that it does not help me, closing my eyes from reality

B
Telling includes explaining what exactly AS is - compared to Kanner autism, which a lot of  people have a hint about what it is. It is hard work, but for me it payed out. If people don't believe, give them written medical statements to prove. I put an article from a good newspaper at the door of my sons classroom to give the other parents and teachers a hint what aspergers is about.

The more you are forced to work with NTs the more should you try to get on well with them. If they find you very unsocial/unhelpful, they get a bad impression of people with aspergers and that is the opposite one could wish. They'd put any person with AS into that drawer - they tend to do this as well, it's only human to think in black-and-white terms (but I think one should become wise enough with age, to recognize this and grow out of it).

Ignorance got 59% of the vote! Hooray, ignorance wins!!!

(Only if we let it.)

Actually, I'm not surprised by this outcome, because I myself---not yet diagnosed; somewhere between "normal" and "not-normal"---am just as guilty of uninformed snap judgements as are many of my more conventional peers.  The more I learn about human diversity, from this site among other sources, the more I respect those whom I do not understand.
I must vote overly social. They care for people too much it hurts their life. Smile
I looked at the date and realised this poll is nearly a year old but anyway

I refuse to lump everyone who is not "neurodiverse" into one category and place a negative characteristic, some of which are sexist and offensive, to sum them up. I refuse to think that NTs are mainly 'bad'. Frankly we are all judgemental in some way. And i think this is one of them.
I realise the opinions i constantly express might come across as too "soft", or perhaps people may think I am trying to placate the NTs. But I stand by what I say nevertheless.

Ignorant? Of AS and autism and either saying oh rubbish theres no such thing etc etc... yes. a lot have a lot of reading to do if they want to participate in any discussion or debate about a persons AS etc. I like those who say "Well I'm not sure... Ive only heard about the more severe cases so I wont pretend to know anything" rather than someone who saw Rianman once and takes it out with you. But ignorant in general? Not necc.

on a side note. About fads, fashion etc.
If your taste happens to be in step with the popular taste, you shouldnt be ashamed of it either, because if you truly dont care what people think, then you wouldnt care if they call you a sheep or not for liking what you like. make sense?
The only characteristic NTs share is that they are neurotypical, unless you count "human" as a characteristic.  *shrug*
