"Autism has such a high genetic risk, but these new findings suggest that there may be many variants of individual genes at work," Blakely said.

With such genetic testing, said Sutcliffe, "you might be able to predict which kids would respond positively to particular SSRI medications."

"We now have concrete evidence in our families that the SERT gene is a risk factor in autism," Blakely said. "Perhaps more importantly, we also have new pathways that could have some therapeutic end points, and that, to us, is really good news."

The studies were supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Alliance for Autism Research, and Vanderbilt's Kennedy Center, Center for Human Genetics Research, Center for Molecular Neuroscience and the General Clinical Research Center.

 Wonder how long before we'll be forced to be on these SSRI medicines.  I've been on Paxil before which is an SSRI, if I recall correctly. I would sleep 23 to 23 1/2 hours a day while on it.

It's not only psychological things they are telling us to be "ill". It's a lot of the blood testing stuff (sorry, miss the right words, so I try to explain).

For example the cholesterine - the "normal range" does not adapt to the fact that people have different chemical systems and therefor the level of cholesterine in healthy people might differ more than the standard range expresses. And sometimes the experts set the level for the standard that high or low (depending on the tested substance) that half of the population can't adapt to it. They make their studies for example with people of a middle age (from 30something to 40something) and expect that younger or much older people have the same results. So a very healthy 60 yr old person just can't get the same result as an 35 yr old, just because metabolism changes over the years! And females are expected to have same level of some chemical substances in their blood as males, or they are expected to be healthy with the same amount of toxic substances.

So they want a specified "drawer" to put in healthy people and another one for ill people and make that "drawer" for healty ones that small a lot of people won't fit in and "needed" medication

i have a solution... dont take ANY medicines for anything unless you are totally going to die, and dont go to any doctor either unless you are going to die.. easy
ok.. i wont go totally specific on this (otherwise this thread will take up too many pages)..but i basically meant... if you have a crappy cold or somethign.. dont go to the docs.. but. if you say.. break your leg, or suddenly get purple rashes on you..etc etc. then its time to go there..
AMEN sista (or brother.. ADoyle... ok i can call you IT for now lol)

ya anyway.. sorry to plug my website, but i have a few pages about my panic days, my psychosis days, how to cure panic, and as of this week, i am putting a timetable/log of what my antidepressant withdrawal is going like! josysyysyssysysysysys

doctors can get STUFFFED!!
eek i hope not! tenaciouscj and i are starting an autism group here.. however we are puzzling whether we should include some kind of help for people with panic and anxiety too - since i have a heap of first hand experience in that....our group will be free... lets hope it even gets off the ground! i think it will be a good thing because we have been getting a few emails about parents in particular who want help.... i mean in the other thread even though i have made a big claim about my own autistic dxd.. it doesnt mean that pple with a genuine and more moderate case of autism arent similar to me.... it would be nice if our group became more of a social thing because there are already a couple of other autism groups - however they are more focused on parents with autistic kids..

hooray for afft!
aaah dear - look....... i dont believe there is a direct line between AS and NT people, so it is very hard to distinguish between the two... the diagnosis of autism itself is just SO broad on the spectrum that you might as well give the label to a heap of people who are both AS and NT (ie myself)...... it would be hoped that our group eithe changes its name to something more generic to stop discriminating people who dont even have a diagnosis at all...

There IS no damn FAT line between AS and NT - infact most people in the world would blend between the two.. i am not a big fan of diagnosing anyone straight from a stupid set of criteria from a book.... tenaciouscj and i will be discussing this for sure..
thats an easy question... YES YES and YES.... we had an NT lady who is studying autism and other things such as ADHD and whatnot at uni, and we had a mother who came who's son has autism.. they both came..we will accept anyone interested in autism..
