Aspies For Freedom

Full Version: I think we may have a fellow aspie in the Big Brother house!

Any Big Brother viewers will know that tonight, 3 new housemates were put in the house - with an interesting twist - that they have to live separate from the existing housemates in a secret garden (which is in actual fact a fake jungle-like room with no windows, to the far side of the Diary Room).

Now, this isn't a place to talk about general TV topics, so to cut a long story short, I'll get straight to the point...

Going by what we've been told about the new male housemate, Eugene, and having watched a couple of hours of him talking with the other two on the E4 live coverage, he seems rather like an aspie!

Before anyone says, yes I know it's impossible and not really appropriate to place a label on someone that I've never met and am just watching on TV, but I just think the guy seems really like me in terms of his personality and outlook on life and a lot of the comments he's made seem quite typical of an aspie. Reading through BB fan sites, he's being called "incredibly boring" and a "geek" by the majority of people on them, implying that he's being seen by general society*, as not normal, like many of us aspies so frustratingly are seen a lot of the time.

*I know a web site is not society as a whole but the one I'm thinking of (DigitalSpy) has thousands of members, so I think it's a pretty good indication of society in general.

So far, we know the guy is in his 27; an engineer dealing with radio transmitters and related equipment; he's an amateur radio enthusiast; is a self-confessed eccentric; is single and a virgin; says alcohol is not his idea of fun and he's clearly intelligent. He also seems quite logical and organised in his thinking, though it's not easy to judge given that these 3 new people have been locked in one room all evening!

Interesting stuff. For anyone who isn't following the series, it might be worth watching on Saturday just out of curiosity (on Channel 4 Saturday evening or 24/7 on E4).

If most people find Eugene boring, that sounds like he could be one of our kind. Would this be because he is not very expressive, or is not really involved in social interactions?

If this guy is an aspie I imagine being locked up with other people 24/7 could be a very trying experience for him. I detest being in such situations. I tend to wilt like a flower in a vase that has no water in it, or get very short-tempered.
My son saw the show last night and Eugene was extremely self expressive and communicated very well. He also used a lot of body language and movements accompanying his speech.

Is that typical or untypical of an aspie?

Maybe he's a nerd, not quite a geek.
Ok, just for the sake of curiosity, tonight I will do something I never ever do: I shall watch BB live.

Ugggggh...out of a similar curiosity I may do the same, but I'm not sure I will be able to convince myself to do this whilst sober so I will have to stop by the offy tonight.

So that I don't have to force myself to watch it too closely, which one is Eugene, please?

*still shuddering at the thought*  Sad
Eugene is a male in a green leaf bikini type thing...
If Eugene only uses odd-looking or over-the-top full-on type body language, with no subtlety, perhaps he could be an aspie. I think if he's the real deal it should show in the body language. If he likes to talk or ask about his or anyone else's emotional state in an uncontrived, natural kind of way then I would say he was just a nerdy NT.
OK, well I did get mildly trollied on an evil little cocktail a friend came up with (you didn't think I was gonna go through this alone did you? ) and I came up with the conclusions that they are all a 'bunschk of fuggingsh wangaars *hic* ', so my results are somewhat inconclusive.

Maybe I will try again a little later in the week but with less alcohol  :?
With the reputation that BB has (yeah, we have that crap over here too...), I suspect that this Eugene guy may be planning on losing his virginity soon...
What kind of Aspie would agree to be trapped in a house with people while being constantly on camera?
One that wants to win a *** load of money at the end of it?

I know I wouldn't.

I'd end up turning into an over-emotional ham.

Eugene has not taken part in all the usual back stabbing, bitching, and sexual shenanigans that happen on these shows, hes also been supportive of a girl when she was being picked on by another housemate.

I don't think aspies are naturally empathic, but can learn to appear to be so. Once an aspie has learned the 'rules' of empathy - use their analytic and logic tendencies to assess a situation, reach a conclusion, and then apply the 'normal' NT solution - shoulder to cry on, listen, try to apply their natural, logical problem solving skills.

My personal experience contradicts this. I don't think I lack empathy, I just think I'm choosy about who I empathise with. When someone is suffering due to their own stupidity or impulsiveness or because someone is getting back at them for something that they have caused, I don't empathise. I don't respond to displays of distress that are more display than distress.

Your argument doesn't appear to me to make logical sense. Why would an aspie be motivated to assist someone if they felt no empathy? Why wouldn't they just proceed on their merry way? I don't buy the idea that aspies only assist people in trouble because of automatic adherence to some set of rules about empathising. There are so many sets of NT rules that aspies don't appear to give a fig about, so why would we be so motivated to follow that particular set of rules?

It's good that Big Brother is not watching me this time.

I wonder what the video cameras at school have about me on them? Do they have information on me wondering about hidden Illuminati cameras?
