Autism

Autism is a disease that I have been asked to get involved in, and I am studying four case histories now. We are about ready to get involved with autistic children in ministry. I’m looking forward to it. Our initial investigation has to do with a neurological breakdown coming out of rejection and rebellion. The entrance points, considering some of the younger ages of autistic children, are something we’re not sure about. I have information coming to me all the time from research but I’m not really in a position to give you a definitive answer today.
Autism is an interesting one. We got a call from Pennsylvania recently, from a gal we’ve been working with. Her autistic son is now cutting himself. There’s self-hatred, and brings a new component into this disease. I believe autism is a result of rejection, and the other components of autism involve rebellion and anger. They are almost the same principles that eventually produce schizophrenia. However, autism is not schizophrenia. Recent medical research indicates that an imbalance in a particular neurotransmitter secretion is implicated.

Dear oh dear, rejection causes autism. Another cause to add to the list.
I didn't think there was any of those idiots still left out there but I do believe that this one has Bruno Bettelheim written all over it:

http://www.firstthings.com/ftissues/ft9706/finn.html

Bettelheim was a charlatan and a liar, and he said the same thing as this chap does, he blamed the parents for their children's autism, claiming that autism was caused by the fact that the mother did not want the child. Basically saying that autism is caused by bad parenting and rejection... That's so not true.

And since genetic markers appearently have been found, markers that only exist in people on the autistic spectrum, we can safely say that this bloke is yet another lunatic who believes that psychoanalytic mumbo jumbo will work on autism and Asperger's. We know it aint so.
I thought when you said that the title was "spiritual roots of disease" that someone would be saying that autism is caused by SIN.

There are plenty of them and there probably always will be.  Anywhere you find religion youll find these people.

This sort of thing is the sort of thing that has always been used to blame disabled people (or those around us who have not done us any harm) for being disabled.  On the one hand, yuck.  On the other hand, *yawn*
