The possible irony of his position was the first thing to hit me too
I think the use of the word Holocaust is a little extreme at this time. The comparison between the Nazi's use of eugenics is still sound though and something that we are in the process of enduring. Unless the Cruiseship for Autism takes on an order of Zyklon-B I don't think we need to blow things out of proportion regardles of how angry we are. If we overstate the mark we will be accused of the same propaganda techniques currently employed by anyone that stands against us, we will effectively lose our right to complain about their lies and disinformation tactics. Hows about we just do what we are best at? Telling the truth.

Greetings,

As far as I can tell, it only applies to IVF babies.  If a couple concieve naturally, its probably unlikely that such tests would take place (unlikely but not impossible).  We really have to work with the other communities on this such as the pro-lifers, downs etc.
But we would be saying prevent the next holocaust, not that we are in one now.

Sorry, missed that. I was feeling a little bit off earlier.
How about we use photos of Autistic/Apspergic adults to show that there is a person behind this message and not just a sloagn?

The faces could be blanked out or the picture have some sort of effect to make it impossible to tell who was in it but members of AFF could pose for them? Or maybe a collage of all our faces to make up one big human face, I couldn't fine a pic to explain that :/ A bit extravagent I realise but something along a similar theme maybe?

Our house would be empty but for spiders if all of the people who carry autism genes and display autistic traits in our family did not exist. Four generations would disappear.

The deplorable Mr Watson is I believe known for controversially arguing for negative eugenics. He is also an eminent scientist. Being politically incorrect, outspoken and scientifically-minded are some traits that seem to be associated with AS. Wouldn't it be an absolute hoot if it turned out that Mr Watson has some of these autism CNPs? I recommend that it should be law that any famous person advocating some genetic screening test should be forced to take the test themself and have the results published for all to see. Maybe someone could steal Mr Watson's toothbrush?

I agree and would happily volunteer to get his toothbrush.  On a side note there was an article recently in People Magazine about the Sperm Bank started by a Nobel Prize winner, back in the 80's I believe, I can't remember his name.  But, it was a followup on what happened to the idea.
His idea was to have Nobel Prize winners donate their sperm and produce the next generation of "Geniuses", suitable women could become impregnated and have "prodigy" babies.  The conclusion of the article was that the whole idea was a false theory.  Only a few children actually had any discernible talent out of the ordinary.  And mostly because they were pushed by the mother.  The sperm bank is now out of business.  Like Watson, he was quite a character.  And was quite reviled for his concept.

It would be in the latest people magazine, which I have since sent to recycling, so I can't give you the exact date and info.

Also on a side note, there was a hilarious article on a reporters "investigation" on what it took to be a sperm donor at a sperm bank that was looking for "quality" sperm for discriminating women.  That was last week on "SLate Magazine, which you can find on msn.com.

Peace

Would this be a book about that genius sperm bank?

I dimly recall seeing media reports a long time ago about the first child born from sperm of a donor selected for his "genuis", and the woman who had that kid (a boy with a strange first name) went on to have another child by the same means who has handicapped in some way. I wish I could verify that story and find out what the second child's condition was.

Yes, that's the one, the article in PEOPLE magazine was a publicity tie in for the book.

Peace

I agree with all of the above.

I also strongly disagree with any move to use the word holocaust or to use the proper Jewish word for it "Churba" in any advertising not only because it would be bad P.R but it would also detract any undecided Aspies from the cause as they would (and rightly so in my view) see it as a gross ,sickening and total overreaction. This means that they could condemn anyone for doing so which would bracket AFF as an extreme group, something which nobody on this forum (believe it or not including me) wants.

In other words, Godwin's Law applies?

I also strongly disagree with any move to use the word holocaust or to use the proper Jewish word for it "Churba"...

Side-tracking here slightly, but the Jews don't own the word holocaust and it certaintly hasn't been the only one throughout history and probably won't be the last. But I agree that using certain buzzwords should definately be avoided. Until people on the spectrum are rounded up and shot lets stick to telling people how things really are and what people are planning to do with such a technology once it's in their hands, not how things could become in the worst case scenario or else we are in danger of being accused of paranoid fantasy. Anyone even remotely clued up on their world history will see the outcome of these moves by people wanting to create a Utopian society of perfect people - it always goes wrong.

I make the comparison between 'curing' Autism and Nazis sometimes because that is what people most commonly think of when talking about forced eugenics, if I were to make the comparison between the Victorians and eugenics I'd get funny looks. I've never seen a comparison towards Nazis or Hitler end a discussion on an Aspie forum before because there is usually a highly logical point being made, the only times I've seen such comparisons being made is on NT forums when people can't explain their views and resort to name calling in order to scare the person they have the problem with off the thread. I know thats a bit genralistic, but it's 2am and I can't be arsed to go into any great detail.

I don't think it would be fair to call anyone through a poster campaign Nazis because all you are doing in effect is further deafening the ears of already ignorant people, and yes I realise that not all people are ignorant towards their own kids needs however there is rather a lot of it out there. What we need is something that will make everybody sit up and listen rather than attack a small section of society with what is tantamount to propagada because that is what they are doing with media concerning ourselves and we'd basically lose our right to complain about their devious methods if we employ them ourselves.

Sorry if I've already said that but I'm not feeling 100%, long hot day in Brighton town center, not good  Sad
I personally have no problem at all with parents being able to abort an embryo on the grounds that the embryo has a genotype that was not inherited from the parents, such as the generally sporadic and unpredictable mutations that cause embryos to have conditions like Down's syndrome or dwarfism.

  :!:
So what's your problem with my opinion, Brightman?

I'd rather continue this debate in the philosophy section as Amy suggested.
We would be happy to take any original articles and put them in that section, when we make it.
"I also don't think there is such thing as a truly unwanted child - witness the high numbers of people who wish to adopt and get turned away because there aren't enough children to adopt."

In some countries that is true, but in poorer countries such as some in south america, there are gangs of street children who have no-one to care for them, and in China, with the one-child policy, they have baby girls being abandoned or left to die by some, as boys are more desirable.
I wish that it was made easier for people to adopt from countries where children and babies are abandoned.

One of the problems seems to be that some governments (like China) do not want to admit that babies are abandoned so often, and when prospective parents go there, they are charged a high price, and often given a disabled child. They are maintaining a facade that it is costly to process the adoption, and that its disabled children that are abandoned.

In actual fact, it is saving the government much to money to have a child cared for elsewhere, and despite cover ups, a documentary, and photgraphic evidence is available, that shows how girls are abandoned at birth.

There are cultural issues for children growing up in a completely different culture, wise parents take this into account and give the child positive references to its origins.

This is a site about 2 documentaries into China's abandoned baby girls.
Its possible such a result would act as a revelation to him, and he may declare it. We can hope.
