Did you see our posts about NT awareness weekend?
yara said "I believe we need more auties and aspies to help bringing the world into a balance, because the way things are going... "

It would be good, right now we are fighting to save the ones we have from a 'cure' and fighting to stop the potential genocide posed by the threat of prenatal testing...not exactly a rosy future Sad
While I do find NT research humorous by itself, due to the fact that NT is used for far more people than the diagnosis applies to I have my own definition of NTism.  Most non-autistic people are not actually default brained.  The people who get in our faces pressuring us to be normal are probably more likely to be NT.
I hold that NTism is having a default brain. Therefore, NTism is largly iatrogenic and misdiagnosed. Being a Deaf person exempts one from NTism due to the development of sight interpretation in the brain rather than auditory integration. All other diffabled people are exempted through the same token, including those compensating for common disabilities like dyslexia. I hold that true cases of NTism may be as rare as 1 in 10.
...and i quote (from DSN-IV):

Quote:
"(1) marked delusional sense of awareness of the existence or feelings of others (e.g., treats a person as if he or she were an extention of himself; behaves as if clairavoyant of another person's distress; apparently projects own concepts and needs onto others)"

*eeeeeek!*

this is *exactly* (well...) what my doc (who's by the way *not at all* well-read in ["on"?] aspie matters - in fact she says that that *i* have taught her everything she knows about neuropsychiatry) does...

what to do? what to do?
:?

she even mocked me (while another person was present) for using the term "neurotypical" - do you guys think i should send her here for you to...hmmm...shall we say *"correct"* her?

If someone who is supposed to help you is mocking you, it doesnt sound good.
Words are just a way of communicating, if they are fairly new words, or old words, the meaning behind them is what matters.

Really the person should respect what you are trying to explain. Sad
thank you for letting me know i'm not the only one who thinks this nt trait is "disturbing"/wrong!

"only" problem is, my doc's the only shrink in town...

she *is* a *very* good psychiatrist - one of sweden's finest when dealing with schizophrenia and/or bi-polar disorder, but neuropsychiatry is something  "new" to her, and i guess it kind of drives her, well, *"crazy"* (for lack of a better word) that *i* - her *patient*, for God's sake! - am trying to educate her...

i also am beginning to think that her "reputation" is playing a significant part in this nt drama - since she's such a *good* psychiatrist, she *"should"* (and now i'm second-guessing her feelings - something she's read in books that  aspies are uncapable of doing) be able to "figure me out"/"help" me...
Sounds like you don't have much choice, but it doesnt make her any good for aspies! Sad
So how do we spot a good doctor for Aspies? i am despairing. The only people I have met who are wise to the idea of my thinking being a normal part of me, like my fingerprint, are not usually very powerful.

i do have problems communicating my healthneeds to doctors, for example I saw my GP three times before i was diagnosed with a grotty ear infection (yes it took some time to figure out my ear was the problem ) and got the right stuff to fix it, it was the third medication we tried. I could not hear properly and this cuts off my feeling where i am and knowing if I say things or not.  i had to take my mother along to make sure something was done. (AARGH!)i am still on a waiting list to get my thyroid and adrenal function checked, while the psychiatrist who sent me for the tests terminated the interview last time because he got too emotional, because i persistently asked if my EEG results were normal. I think he is upset he cannot put me in a box. I know if i told him I was AS he would get up on his soapbox and never shutup about how wrong i was, so i am just hoping for him to come to the conclusion himself.

There are no good conventional doctors out there. If i could afford it i would go to a naturopath, someone who knows that communication is hard for me and that it is their job to ask the right questions so they can learn.
Regular doctors are not too good at learning from their clients. They do not even have the time to read stuff I write down.

So how do we spot a good doctor for AS?

Vendaia said "The whole intent of good acting lessons is to get the actor to project emotion via tone and body language. Perhaps we could get "therapy" for autistic folks to go in this direction."

First you have to assume that autistics want to put on what would literally be an act, in order to please NTs.
Then you have to assume that we would be efficient at keeping up such an act, presumably through a lot of training.

Would you like to have to act all the time just to be accepted, or would you rather a better option of being accepted as who you are?

an nt

first, there is simply no way that anyone should be forced to perform outside of a relative comfort zone for others. as humans you choose how you act and face the consequences and rewards.
Aspies who decide to not gain a certain amount of covering will likely enjoy less NT-style social success, but possibley gain other types of success and will certainly be less stressed.
NTs that have a problem with your choices are the same ones who are happy to show all sorts of intolerances and thus not worth the trouble to worry about.

as an NT who has seen up close and personal the power of the Aspie Intelligence, I must ask... When you take over the world, is it true that you Aspies will make all Lakes square?

That was a joke...
Square lakes is just silly!

We will only have square mountains, everything else will be octagonal.

Peter Wrote:
I think mountains should be pyramid-shaped. They'd look much neater, and besides it would immortalize us in the eyes of future generations. Not to mention you'd never have to buy new razor blades ever again.*

*Humor

LOL... has anyone been watching a recent episode of Mythbusters lately...

With pyramid mountains, you'll probably run the risk of a dozen Hatak class motherships landing on the Alps. That's not very handy if you don't want to be enslaved by another race.

What was the result?

Fairly much what one could have imagined. There is no "pyramid energy".

They did have quite an interesting result with a piece of fruit placed inside a pyramid, though. At first look, it seemed to rot slower than one placed outside. That was, until the person who had been responsible for cutting the fruit in two halfs realized that there had been a foreign substance on the blade he used, which had made one half rot slower than the other. The experiment was thusly attempted again, and this time the two halfs of the fruit rotted at the same rate.

Ingenious method of cutting an apple in two though. Just run it through a sawblade ten times bigger than the apple itself...

It is really sad that there is no cure for the NTs. Sad
