In the USA, I think they use the word "college" to mean the undergraduate section of a university.  In the UK, many students do have to pay £1000 a year for their tuition fees (but luckily I was exempt because when I started my course, my family's income was below the threshold where they start charging).

But from next year, top up fees are going to be introduced   , which will mean that *every* student will have to pay fees of £3000 a year, but they will only start paying it after they have graduated and have a job with income higher than £15,000 a year.  It will be deducted from the graduate's salary through the taxation system, and with an interest rate set at the rate of inflation.  If the graduate hasn't paid it all within 25 years, the amount outstanding will be written off.  However, lots of people are concerned that the higher rates will put many young people off studying for a degree.

What I would do is abolish all tuition fees, re-introduce grants to fund the general living costs, and have the education system paid for out of general taxation like it used to be!!

Hello Amy,
Is it free college is free in the U.K.? I didn't know that I you knew about the national healthcare because M.M. told me.
Hello Thornycactus,
I you like the no perfume they make me sick and angry!
Here's one idea I have which would solve the overpopulation problem for a pretty long period of time: (it is however currently impossible to pull off, something that I haven't decided yet whether it's good or bad)

* Make abortions compulsory and fully enforced worldwide for 10 years, and have everyone attempting to give birth to a child, breaching this law, during this period, sterilized.
* Disallow people who are unable to work with anything at all from being a part of society, and, depending on whether they would be able to survive on their own, either banish them from society or put them down.

And another idea which could possibly improve the world, but it's currently impossible to say what the end result would be:

* Intelligence-test (or rather the opposite; test for stupidity. I think that could be made far more accurate) the world's population, and brainwash the less intelligent half into mindless slaves who are then to gleefully do all the heavy work, (as well as mundane, mindless tasks) and push the more intelligent half's intelligence to it's limits, trying to develp their capability as far possible, and then have them do all the intellectual work.
I think the mass murdering of people to solve Word over population is a going too far.

But for this planet to keep humans in existance. We must first try and solve the problem of global warming. And actually consurve our enviroment. By both demolising Poverty and re-newable energy resources.

So in a way to abbolish poverty. The whole world must to be communist. Well, i have a slightly different idea. Where in schools you get to do what 3 best things you are good at with tests and your personal preference. Then you get educated on these. And have one as your main one, if you ever have any spare time or feel like moving on to something else(with reasonable limitations) go to one of your other professions.

And to devise a new trading method. So we have fare trade overseas to other countries and locally.

for Global Warming. All Vehicals and heating systems using any fossil fules should be re-cycled to something which doesn't use fossil fuels. And must invest in power plants that use re-newable electricty. As well as have the most effecient power apliences at home.

So having pritty much all transpot systems vanished. We shall invest in other technologies for clearner fules for cars to be placed onto the road. Such as hydrogen cars and electric cars.

Then hopefully gurantee our existance for another few thousand of years.

In Sweden up until the late 1980's, anyone who was considered mentally deficient, including autistics, were compulsorily sterilized.

I noticed you are from Sweden Freak, does this idea still prevail there, has it negatively influenced you? I hope that's not too personal a question.

To be honest, I have never heard of it until now. But then, I'm 16, and my knowledge of the "near past" might be a bit limited in some areas.

And it seems very unlikely that it is a commonly held idea nowdays, especially concidering that I have never heard of it before.

I am strongly assuming here that you have no children and don't mind if you don't have any. Most people don't feel like that and would be very traumatized to live in a world where they have no choice to have children.

Correct. (It would be quite strange otherwise, when it comes to the first half of your assumption atleast)

Somewhere around a year or so back, I thought that perhaps, even thought I then couldn't dream of wanting to have a child, it was fully possible that I would one day change my mind. I have however increasingly gone towards the opposite direction since then. Currently, I would much rather (and I am fully honest here. but then, dying is nothing I would really mind that much, altought I can't really say I feel like it) die than have a child, and I doubt I would change my mind unless something drastically would happen.

I want less and less to do with people in general, as well, and for every month, the need to be completely isolated for some time increases. It's one of the few things that I look forward to in the not-so-far-away future. Once I'm done with school (for then, atleast), I plan to move away from home and isolate myself completely for a month or two. Or maybe three or four. Or perhaps more, concidering that my estimation of how long I will want to be isolated seems to increase continually over time. Concidering this, I don't think I could stand having a child, since it would probably rob me of my precious privacy (which I currently have far too little of, since I currently live with my dad) and make it nearly impossible to be alone during my freetime.

Also, in one way, I feel like there are far too many people in this world, and adding another to it would equal making it a bit worse.

And most people would be traumatized? Sounds a bit extreme, but it would hardly surprise me if it was an immediate change. If there was a slow, gradual change towards it, however, people would most likely eventually end up being used to it and see it as the only right thing, and not even see anything else as a serious possibility, just like it is today when it comes to so incredibly many different things.

Well if we look at China with the one child policy, so many are unhappy with it. Can you imagine if no-one, anywhere, could have children?

I think traumatized is more of an understatement.

On the other hand, they know the rest of the world can have multiple children; know that it is a possibility which is denied them. Of cource they are unhappy with the policy; they are denied something they otherwise could have had.

They can also have one child, and when they do, they experience how it is having one. That experience might then increase their longing for another one, making them more unhappy with the one-child policy.

Here are two factors which would not be present if no one, anywhere, could have children. Apart from that, a great deal of the unhappiness could be taken care of by applying mild brainwashing, something that could be done anytime with the person's consent, (something that would probably be pretty common, perhaps even a norm, concidering the constant pressure and indoctrination from society) or anyway, if the person is truly getting traumatized.

If there is an option to get money out of it at high effiency. Then Thats all they really do. FInd new ways to get more money. And make more excusises for shortages for money!
* Ban speeders, especially the ones that say they only exceeded the speed limit by "a small amount"
My bus is full of "I used to drive but the cops took away my license" people. I'd rather have these "road cowboys" off the street and on my bus, somehow I feel safer knowing they are not behind, beside or in front of me while I'm driving.
The only reason They have low incomes is due to families problems. Which the inherit. Not ginetical. But they copy off them. With such bad behavour it makes it difficult for them to be taught so not a good education and Thus not a good job. Which all-in-all makes things worse. But they still make idiodic decisions which only Requires even basic things like common sense.

But i still Beleive with the lack of common sense. It would sound to be a god idea If they all disapeared. It gets rid of one of societies Major problems and give people much more peaceful lives.
I do beleive some criminals can not learn what right from wrong and will continuee to there wicked ways. And if its bad enogth they are possibly immune to punnishment. Part of there ordinary lifestyle.

So i would say that they should be sent to an island where they won't be accepted into our country.
If I could make laws, I would stop the law coming that requires all adults to wear helmets when riding bicycles or using non-motorized skooters or rollerblades.  I do wear my helmet when I rollerblade.  I hate it.  I can not see making everyone go out to spend $40 on some helmet so they will not get fined responsibly riding their bike on a safe bike path in the park.
i would not make any laws because i wish for people to learn to self direct themselves. but i know this is a big ask. i just try for myself.

but since i am a contrary thinker and like to play with this, in another world i would like all those who have powers alter other peoples freedom by word or deed, such as imprisonment, surgery, medication, physical force, ignorance of others needs,  to experience the results of that exercise of their power.

so if someone has the power to order an assessment of mental capability/ needs then they would have to undergo similar. Or the power to section/imprison then they would  have to be similarly amputated. This would only need to happen for a short time. For example, it does not take very long to feel the effects of a mind altering drug.

There are some people who have power who have gone out of their way to experience the effects of their power. For example David Healy ( do a wikipedia search if interested) i have a lot of respect for people like that.

has anyone else seen Kubricks A Clockwork Orange? One of my favourites.... he he he...
