I tend to walk around eating a sandwich or something else "portable", only time i'll sit down is when i'm on the computer working, often at college i'd sit in the corner of the common room with my laptop and just listen to music on earphones while hacking away on something or other.

Yeah,I do similar to this to although don't bring lunch to avoid one less problem,do you find that after putting the earphones on and starting to listen to the music, others who are personally known/aqaintances etc, will keep trying to ask you something pointless?
I'm always getting pestered by others in my class whilst trying to listen to cds on the class computers when it's supposed to be quiet during break.

When I was at school and in the jobs I've had, I would simply skip lunch and wander the streets, browsing in shops until the lunch break was over.  I can't stand people watching me eat.
It is necessary to engage in a "social" lunch once or twice each week unless you are a part-time employee. If things are very busy it is avoidable, but when things slow down it is expected.  Have one "prepared" story to share in case it is appropriate. Be sure the story is light, either entirely predictable/boring or amusing. Amusing is best, but not necessary.  No dark or deep subjects allowed at the lunch table. Laugh when others laugh, or at least smile and nod. Comment on the food or beverage, briefly, ie, "this is good" or "that looks good" or something else reasonably positive. If there is nothing positive to say, skip this part of social bonding unless everyone is complaining. Eat slowly, having your mouth full is a good reason not to be talking. Be sure you smile and say you had a nice time when you go, maybe a crack about getting back to work -- something silly like, "See you at the race track." fait accompli. All you are doing is showing that you are likable. Most people have an innate distrust of outsiders, so you must periodically demonstrate that you are not threatening.  A 30 minute lunch is an appropriate way to do that.
Ish! I could think of few worse things than faking so much. Still, it would be different if we had an in-house cafeteria rather than having to either bring in packed lunches or go into the city centre to buy something. I kind of wish we did have our own cafeteria in the building but that died off years ago.

Yeah, well, I don't want to clean my toilet bowl, but I do it because I don't want a nasty toilet bowl.  Same, same.  If you don't want nasty coworkers ....

I very seldom ever eat during the day.

I just used to have quick sandwich on the days I was working, but only in the 'smoke room ' ( a much more relaxed atmosphere ), I never used the dining room which I found to intimidating. Many others felt the same way.

I used to be very phobic about eating in front of / with  others', so I developed coping strategies that worked for me.

But that's just ridiculous! You don't get nasty co-workers just because you have lunch by yourself sometimes. It's a free country and if you want to eat by yourself you just do it!

I pretty much always eat at my desk. I just can't cope with additional socialising - being at work is stressful enough already.

I have tried eating with my co-workers a couple of times, but I only lasted 10 mins each time, and couldn't think of anything to say anyway.

Depends who it is - there are some people I would happily lunch with but I agree it is very tiring when you have to keep thinking of something to say.

It depends on the coworkers and culture of the place of business to some extent, as well as other variables. I recall one place where everyone was going out to celebrate some guy's birthday.  I hardly knew the guy and not been specifically invited, plus I certainly had better things to do with my time.  I never recovered from skipping his birthday lunch without expressing my regrets, and he absolutely DESPISED me thereafter.  Go figure.

Well, he was the one with the problem - not you.
