If you let it get to you, they have succeeded in spreading their dysphoria, which you then might spread yourself to other people. It's a mental virus.
I know it's extremely hard to just ignore it, so I don't think a little 'assertion' should go untouched.
I also know how hard it is to be assertive when they've successfully pounded your spirit to the ground. That's how they win; less and less people become able to speak out against them.

I don't believe that they are all living in squalor, and have to commit crime, vandalise, and get drunk to escape it.
Lots of them have full time jobs, good cars, and revel in their own 'culture' shown by their trademark clothes, and attitude.
1.Many people who are perfectly law-abiding and never cause trouble for others also live in council housing
2.You claim that housing has an effect on the criminal actions of some
3.Therefore something must already be present in the people who are affected by their housing
The root cause is still not housing

I think the proper term is 'risky shift', when otherwise stupid ideas become plausible ones when in a group.
Uh, anyway, it's better to ignore these people, they're not nice to anyone except their own and frankly, I never want to be one of them (I seem to be their social and fashion opposite, a goth). As my granny used to say, "if you lose your temper, you've lost the argument" and I think the same holds true here. Yes, they may be an annoyance, but don't give them the satisfaction of knowing they've gotten to you.
Well, unless you can show it to them by kicking their asses.
I stopped writing fanfic a while ago, I'm an awful writer ^^;; I'm more likely to draw fanart than write fanfic, but it doesn't stop me from the occasional drabble now and again
what do you mean from the other side? they're more likely to stone me rather than talk to me. When they were on their own though, they never caused me any grief and considering how they usually treat me I think being ignored by them is them being nice.
Firstly you actually know some of these people it seems, secondly you were defending them. If they ignored me I would love it.
Its the shouting, stares and aggression that bothers me.
