Nice work...charcoal is fun to work with.

It is fun, But I hate the noise it makes on dry paper. It sounds and feels like nails on a chalkboard to me. Makes all the hairs on my neck stand up.
I've heard of suffering for the craft, but I didn't think this was what people had in mind!

Can you still get those paper sticks to smudge with? Those were my favorite thing, once I discovered that you had to get some charcoal on them to get them to start working...
I also loved the texture of those gum erasers!

Did you try working with earplugs?
It would be a shame if you'd stop working with charcoal or if you'd keep suffering from the noise.
Your style is more mature than your face lets us believe.
Very good plasticity.
Keep on!

LOL! I had NEVER heard anyone else mention this. I HATE IT! Being in a room full of art students scribbling away with charcoal -- AAAAUGH!
But the self-portrait is excellent!

I can't seem to decide on a photo to enter into the local fair. I'm torn between my personal favourite, the leaf, and the technical (and general appeal) of the flower.

The leaf. Really striking.

I don't mind the sound of charcoal, but the feeling..yeah. But I have that eraser handy, to rub my fingers in if need be.

I use charcoal pencils pretty often. I usually do a lot of blending with charcoal; it also gives me the chance to experiment with value more than other materials would.

Yes!

The leaf is exceptional composition and it shows you something more than what you would normally see when looking, if that makes sense. The flower is very nice, but the leaf is great!

OMG I hate this sound too <_< that and polystyrene, it makes my teeth hurt for some reason D: They're hurting just thinking about it D:
Great portrait, I suck at people. I like how you've kept the mark making to a minimum thus keeping the overal piece quite soft
