I highly enjoy electronic bands like Portishead, Dub Sweden and The Knife, as well as videogame music and some very varied stuff. But I've never really understood trance, house or industrial or anything like that, I prefer melodies rather than noice and beats.
I particularly like things on the experimental and 'listening' sorts of electronic genres - in other words, not as fond of trance and other stuff that's really meant for clubs and dancing.  I like the ambient, IDM, glitch and microhouse stuff.  Luomo, Autechre, Murcof, Four Tet, Pole, etc, etc.
I'm not much of a fan of electric, but the song I'm listening to now has a hint of it in it... I personally listen to bands like Korn, Muse, 30 Seconds to Mars, Codeseven, and some others.
to me, electronic music meant Pink Floyd, Emerson Lake and Palmer, and the like; I like them too as well as British Ska, 80's new wave which is somewhat electronic.  Also like the Beatles, Stones and British invasion.
hardcore isn't electronic music in america. hardcore is stuff that originated from the sex pistols, but it's much faster. it was really big from 1980-1986 here. sorry, i got confused when you guys mentioned it.
