And the supplementary question, is he likely to grow out of it? What my son has been doing for a month or so now (in addition to the teeth grinding - aaaargh) is swallowing air and then burping. It doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as the teeth grinding but I doubt it'll endear him to his peers (actually, with boys it might?!). He does it most when excited so far as I can tell - his Leapster console causes it to go through the roof.

I have very bad news for you.  You have produced a boy.  These creatures, while at one time deemed marginally acceptable, in modern society are innately intolerable.  Any sort of identifiably "boyish" behavior has no place in our modern, enlightened culture.  He must have immediate consciousness raising at the local feminization centers, also known as "public schools".  These venues are well-suited to identifying and eradicating such "boyish" activity and "masculinity" in general.
Be glad the air comes out that end.
Heh. I did that too. Still do it on occasion, even though I'm a girl (though fortunately boys tend not to be so sensitive about the whole burping thing). Don't know if it could be considered stimming or not.
Lol, I do that tooSmile  I call it the human version of cribbing Wink  (for those that don't know much about horses, horses that crib will bite onto something and suck in air, for the sake of feeling the air being sucked in...or out of boredom)

I've done that thing the horses do. I also used to chew on paper towels, and still often push air through my teeth.

I love this place! Quick responses from people who know (or who are at least likely to have a good idea about stuff...)

I can do the grossout version myself (but I'm a laydeee). This is almost constant and with limited language at three, it's not gonne be for effect. Doesn't get much response from me anyway because, as I've already admitted, I'm a bit gross Wink

One thing that I've been doing for practically forever is making spit bubbles, more like a spit wall, so I open my mouth and there's a thin film.

LOl, me too!  I remember crying, and then to stop myself I'd make huge spit bubbles.  The consistency of spit after crying is so much nicer for making bubbles than ordinary spit.Wink  And back when my little brother shared a room with me and we had a bunk bed, I'd sit on the top bunk and make spit ropes as low as I could then pull them back in.  I guess I was a gross little girl...now I'm a gross adultBig Grin

Just make him drink a bottle of this stuff! I guarantee you it'll turn him into a prim and proper flower girl in no time!

Thanks DogBrain!
You gave me a good laugh, and everybody in the office (we are educating teachers) agreed, that there are not enough male teachers. Which doesn't mean, that the teacher should burp more in front of the classBig Grin.

One of my sons did the teeth grinding thing, but one of my neices did it too, and did it for far longer.  My mom's dentist got pretty rich fixing her teeth, apparently she ground them all throught her childhood.  I don't know about whether it is a stim or not.  Of the group above, only my son is on the spectrum.

I recall not reacting when my son made the jarring, hair raising, scraping noise, with his teeth.  It only lasted about a month. I think that growing teeth is hard.

He stims in many ways, but his teeth are gorgeous now.  He actually just lost one of his baby teeth.  (11 years old)
It's something that boys do.I did that. A lot of boys did. It's burping. It's fun.
Hate to tell you this, but he's probably just being male.  Immaturity goes with the domain at that age.  And yes, even I do it as an adult, though not in public, and more because I tend to have gas issues from eating certain kinds of beans or any kind of meat (which I've merely stopped eating altogether), and that allows me to get rid of the gas without discomfort.
