So I'm new and I'm not sure if this is the best place to post this, but I'm an Aspie who was diagnosed not even a year ago, and still in her teen years! (Oh, Joy!)

I'm writing a final paper for a class and it's about benefits versus disadvantages of having a diagnosis of Asperger's syndrome, or really any diagnosis...so far I have topics such as having doors opened (treatment, help, financial assistance, understanding, new programs) and on the other side, things like how having the diagnosis of Asperger's effects one's self esteem and such...

Are there more benefits or disadvantages?

If anyone's got any good statements, or things they would like to add to this, please add! Thanks!
Usually more benefits to a diagnosis

1. Legal protection - look at ADA section II employment
2. Opens doors to occupational rehabilitation and treatment for things like depression, attention deficit, etc.
3. Other accommodations at work, etc.

In the USA you can forget protecton and accommodations if no disability, and you may have to pay for own training and treatment if no disability.

Disadvantage: If you saw the movie Sicko, I'm sure some insurance companies would like to play hardball with Aspies.  I haven't met any (I have personally dealt with Federal Blue Cross Blue Shield, Mid Atlantic Medical Services Inc. MAMSI and MAMSI Optimum Choice, and Anthem BCBS), and my co-worker suggested that it could be smaller insurance plans that try it and get away with it, because bigger plans like ours might not get away with it.
cons -- labels, prejudice, prejudging in job and social situations
