Emo?  I wish someone would explain this new word.

Emo = Goth lite.

Ah.  Sort of like the Bon Jovie et al (soft cock rock) of Heavy Metal then.

Lol.  That's what we all call Bon Jovie and the like back then!  It was official terminology for rock lite.  Tongue

To be clear.. Oh, Springsteen I like - just saw him the next town over in a benefit concert - but bon jovi I have seen in concert too - too soft!

Oh - Springsteen got close but never put down the pole.  He remains cool.  Sorry about giving you that association with your neighbour AT.  I hope you don't giggle next time he's in a cue or something.  Smile))

Well he just might be autistic.
And he certainly swears alot at his mother -who seems to put up with it. Why doesn't she tell him not to- and set those boundaries for him, and herself?
Maybe help him learn a bit about the other 'f' word too-flexibility :)

His comment about socks was pretty funny :)
The ending was quite poignant I thought-he's talking about how depressing it is when people call him weird- and how he can think back on all his fun childhood memories when he is older-and bored, and.. all alone.
I don't think he's a fake because he's being a prick, and I don't think he's being a prick because he's emo. I think he's just a bit of a prick.

Not the best rep for us, really. Or for that matter, for emos.

no, Emos are no worse than Goths, or Grungers, or Aspies; but it depends on the subject in question.

I don't believe thats true. Emos are just whiny teenagers who feel traumatized because their parents wouldn't let them stay up to watch the x files at night when they were little.
The grunge and goth bands of the nineties were awesome.

(never heard of an emo till this thread - and maybe people in the Uk have but I doubt people can really put the two together unless too many aspies doth protest too much - with threads putting the two together...)
I liken it (perhaps) to a bunch of years ago - my generation of american youth - was all called gen-x-ers - and on TV or MTV welooked like a bunch of ***es with no skills - no merit in that -just a silly generality... (maybe)

No offence but you must not get out much if you've never heard of emos, as its been a massive scene for around 5 years, in the UK and USA (unfortunately).
Its followers listen to bland mainstream rock bands with zero talent.
I've never heard of gen-x-ers though whatever that means to be honest.

Now I think, I have seen the term Generation X mentioned now and then on the internet, but when first I saw gen-x-ers, I didn't think of it relating to that.
Its not a term I've ever heard anyone say or use in conversation in real life to be honest, but maybe thats just where I live.
Grunge and Goth collectively were called Alternative Rock in the nineties as far as I recall.

I have never heard of emos until I visited this forum, but you have never heard of GenXers!  OMG!  That was the grunge and goth bands of the 90's.  They are now on to Generation Y-ers.

I liked the Wierd Al video for Smells Like Teen Spirit/Nirvana-----   Shaved head- this space for rent, guy eating bagel out of mop bucket, Wierd Al cutting his own long blond Kurt Cobain hair...

I haven't said he is being a prick for being emo. In addition when commenting my concern that he doesn't have Aspergers, I said how annoyed I am that Aspies and Emos are always associated with each other.

My reply wasn't aimed at you, or anyone else. It was just my opinion. Smile

Jack looks like an emo stereotype in that he's being miserable all the time. Most emos don't actually do that- there are people in my year who could be called emo, who are really cheerful most of the time.

However, some people do try to get into a subculture by reading the manual. Jack looks like he's being miserable all the time because he thinks that's what you have to do in order to be an emo. It's no different to some twonk thinking that they can't be a hippy unless they smoke weed, or can't be a goth unless they sound like Wednesday Adams.

And - I meant to ask this the other night but ran out of posting credits.... what does 'facepalm' mean?

excuse me, whilst I facepalm into oblivion.

I class myself as a metalhead; most people look at me and see goth, however (large, spikey platform boots, long hair, pale monitor tan, black clothes, spikes from my knuckles to my elbow, a kneelength coat, spiked, cinched rather tightly at the waist (I can get my hands around my waist) and sometimes a collar),

If I am a goth, I am not the stereotypical one.
and I dont fit the stereotype for metalheadness either.

I'm just...me.

yes, I get abuse for it, but *** 'em.
I've been attacked for it, but I usually come out better; and chavs are cowards on their own.

Why are you facepalming? I wasn't talking to you when I posted my post. And it is true.. some people do think that they can only become a punk/goth/hippie etc by reading a website on how to do it. They genuinely think they have to wear certain things, listen to certain music even if they hate it and act a certain way. They are idiots, but they do exist. Why else would there be people on YouTube arguing over whether a band is Gothic Metal, Vampyric Metal or Vampyric Gothic metal or saying that you can't be a real emo/goth if you don't do xyz.
YouTube comments are scary, but great if you want to research chavs, elitist music snobs and village idiots.

Why does everyone think I am addressing them personally today? You're the second. Is there a little birdie flying around telling people that I was talking about them in my post?

You have annoyed me though, Pikajedi5, through no fault of your own. I decided around a year ago that I wanted to go alternative, but I didn't know what I was aiming for and kept changing my mind, so now, thanks to my own indecisiveness, I am stuck with a sort of mosher/emo style which isn't really what I want. I am hopefully going to get some new trousers and the boots in the summer hols (even though Mum isn't keen and gave me what you could call 'the Sophie Lancaster lecture') but it will be ages before I manage to get the image I want, thanks to my budget and my school's rules regarding hair dye and piercings, the squares.Big Grin

OK- now I've ranted and calmed down I will apologise for being bitter and having a chip on my shoulder, and take my turn to facepalm.Shy

I don't hate you, Pikajedi (or, for that matter, anyone else) and I haven't been eating blue smarties- any waffling in my post was down to my random mood. Honest.Big Grin

wha-

NO! I wasnt facepalm at you!

I was facepalming at the people who seem to find a manual!

Oops, sorry.

It looks like I've started thinking people are talking to me.

*facepalms again, before crawling into a hole in the wall.*

Emo is so much better than chavs. Emos might scream but they don't stab you. Also emos don't encourage ignorance like chavs do.

Exactly. I hate chavs with avengence, but I'm OK with regards to everyone else.

As far as I'm concerned, you ave to act like a chav (ignorant, stupid, a bully, nasty pack mentality) to be one- people who look a bit chavvy yet are OK as people don't count IMO.

I see the word chav as an insult, so I don't throw it around.

It says on the forum that the last post in this thread was by GustaveParker- who replied to lots of threads in a small space of time. I came on this thtead as I thought it had been updated, but the last post is still mine.
