I'm speechless. This abuse is sickening!

5-year old Alex Barton was in kindergarten until his teacher wendy portillo got his peers to tell what they thought of him, and then had them take a vote that ended with 14 - 2 in favor of kicking him out of the class.

Further information about this is available at Ballastexistenz & Asperger Square 8.
He might be an Aspie. Apparently he's in the process of being evaluated for AS.

Isn't that illegal? What did the 5 year olds parents say?

they have already taken action.  see the entire article here: http://www.tcpalm.com/news/2008/may/23/s...-year-old/

Is Alex an Aspie?

yes.  but this is wrong to do to any kid, autistic or not.  you don't encourage kids to bully and harass other children, you're supposed to stop this type of nonsense.

Yeah. It would probably hurt an NT child even more, what with their dependence on social approval... But at five, most Aspies are still pretty innocent, and haven't learned to be self-sufficient, so it's just about as bad when they're that young.

That woman should never teach again. I don't care how gross or annoying the kid is. I don't care if he eats his own snot or if he screeches at the top of his lungs or pulls people's hair or gets sent to the principal's office more often than the rest of his class together. That is no way to treat a five year old kid--or a fifty year old guy, for that matter.
If the kid was truly misbehaving, she should have sent him to the principals office. Also the fact call the kid's parents and tell them about his behavior so they can talk to him about it. That is also what teachers are supposed to do when a student is having problems or if they had misbehaved. The school principal does it too when a student is punished. Call home and inform the parents what happened in school so they can talk to their child about it.

Ok.  It's all agreed then.  The teacher is an abuser that should not be allowed to teach.  She has the EQ of a snail.

Now - how about a signed letter from all of us?  Right to the HeadMaster!

Infact - how about a signed letter that includes all our comments here, as said, expressing our outrage and demands for change!

alectrum

Cool.  Who has read most on the issue?  I'm not stepping forward because I'm recovering from meltdown and I don't feel as coherant as usual.

it just needs to get across the message, "The Autistic Community Frowns on your Shenanigans".

followed by signi...hang on. what, just our names?

Lol.  Yeah, that!  Smile

alectrum

Also - I just know I'd write a total rant about aspects of sociology, psychology, authority and obidience, - basically all those special interest stuff that I can get very overwhelming about if I'm like I am now.  And then the people reading it would have glazed eyes and I wouldn't get the message across, and I wouldn't be doing this boy who needs our help much good.

I'll compile a list of members who would like to sign and leave thier comments if you will do the main letter, although I'll rant the whole of what I would have said if you need inspiration and you can cut it short and condense it to suit the audiance if you like?  Smile

It would be horrible if this teacher did have a high EQ. This is possible. Then she's using all her 'qualities' to manipulate and bond the other children at the expense of this boy. What a horrible thought that a woman like that is setting examples for the other kids.

Maybe we can send something to the child and mother too. To let them know that they are not the ones with social defective behaviour.

Some teacher get very on the level of thier kids emotionally, and that's a form of immaturity too.  Relating to where kids are, you have to pull pack and be the adult they need you to be, and employ that level of specialised discrimination that teaches by example.

She has taught discrimination, scapegoating, and a immature use of authority that survives by divide and conquer.  I think she must be a rather stupid woman to do this in a classroom, ignoring all of her training in basic sociology, psychology and child development.

I have emailed Ms Portillo, and also the cotnacts from the Whose Planet Is It Anyway site:
http://autisticbfh.blogspot.com/2008/05/...wendy.html
"There is no excuse whatsoever for a teacher, who ought to be setting an example of positive values, to instead teach a group of kindergarteners to bully and ostracize an emotionally vulnerable child. Wendy Portillo needs to be removed from that classroom immediately, so that she cannot abuse any more children. The St. Lucie County Schools must also be made aware of the need to review and strengthen the school district's policies on preventing bullying and other abuse, as well as training teachers about neurological differences. I wonder what this kid's classmates thought he did to deserve this?
in the comments section of this story at TCPalm and The Palm Beach Post, many of them are actually defending the teacher.  they said things like "thanks for standing up against political correctness" and "this child was impending on the other's right to learn" and stuff like that.  it's disgusting.  thankfully, others are chewing these people out.
Here we are. From another forum thread (same subject.)

Forgive me if this has been posted before. I only just discovered about it.

PORT ST. LUCIE - Melissa Barton said she is considering legal action after her son's kindergarten teacher led his classmates to vote him out of class.

After each classmate was allowed to say what they didn't like about Barton's 5-year-old son, Alex, his Morningside Elementary teacher Wendy Portillo said they were going to take a vote, Barton said.

By a 14 to 2 margin, the students voted Alex -- who is in the process of being diagnosed with autism -- out of the class.

Melissa Barton filed a complaint with Morningside's school resource officer, who investigated the matter, Port St. Lucie Department spokeswoman Michelle Steele said. But the state attorney's office concluded the matter did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, so no criminal charges will be filed, Steele said.

Port St. Lucie Police no longer are investigating, but police officials are documenting the complaint, she said.

Steele said the teacher confirmed the incident took place.

Portillo could not be reached for comment Friday.

Steele said the boy had been sent to the principal's office because of disciplinary issues. When he returned, Portillo made him go to the front of the room as a form of punishment, she said.

Barton said her son is in the process of being diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, a type of high-functioning autism. Alex began the testing process in February at the suggestion of Morningside Principal Marcia Cully.

Children diagnosed with Asperger's often exhibit social isolation and eccentric behavior..

Alex has had disciplinary issues because of his disability, Barton said. After the family moved into the area and Alex and his sibling arrived at the school in January, Alex spent much of the time in the principal's office, she said.

He also had problems at his last school, but he did not have issues during his two years of preschool, Barton said.

School and district officials have met with Barton and her son to create an individual education plan to address his difficulties, she said. Portillo attended these meetings, Barton said.

Barton said after the vote, Portillo asked Alex how he felt.

"He said, 'I feel sad,' " Barton said.

Alex left the classroom and spent the rest of the day in the nurse's office, she said.

Barton said when she came to pick up her son at the school Wednesday, he was leaving the nurse's office.

"He was shaken up," she said.

Barton said the nurse told her to talk with Portillo, who told her what happened.

Alex hasn't been back to school since then, and Barton said he won't be returning. He starts screaming when she brings him with her to drop off his sibling at school.

Thursday night, his mother heard him saying "I'm not special" over and over.

Barton said Alex is reliving the incident.

The other students said he was "disgusting" and "annoying," Barton said.

"He was incredibly upset," Barton said. "The only friend he has ever made in his life was forced to do this."

St. Lucie School's spokeswoman Janice Karst said the district is investigating the incident, but could not make any further comment.

Vern Melvin, Department of Children and Families circuit administrator, confirmed the agency is investigating an allegation of abuse at Morningside but said he could not elaborate.

As a parent of a child with this form of Autism I am disgusted and furious that an educator would do this at all, let alone to a child that has this form of Autism.

I can only hope she never works in education ever again.

Yes, but we're not a child-rights group, we're an Aspie-rights group.   It's noble cause, but there are also sweat shop workers and rainforests being cut down and child sex workers and female genital mutilation and a million other worthy causes that aren't any less worthy just because they're nothing to do with AFF's goals.

Sorry, I'm not trying to start a fight or pick points.  Really.

Ah heck, I'm going to have offended someone anyway.  Sorry.
