I heard something about us being a very radical group and something about Gareth suing someone...

And recently, when there was a big nasty argument in a thread, it was posted over at WP, who I do not belong to, but someone else pointed it out, and I went over and checked it out.

Love your ideas....
I think AFF is great -
But I can't let my son loose on here - some of the threads get out of hand - there certainly aren't any roberts rules of roder - maybe the site should be split in twoo - silly stuff and serious stuff.. a message/messages/opinions that can be sent out to the world and message that is more splinter group

Sorry about the nightmare of typos and lack of grammar - I had no business coming on this forum this morning as I had only 10 minutes until I had to leave for one of my sons' class trips. . . and I wnated to see if anyone answered my parents support thread reagrding soemthing of great importance for my aspie son.  Being as his life depends on my/our actions right now.  (maybe I'm being a bit melodramatic but not much). As usual I got one response, but hey I am just a parent looking for opinions from aspies/ who might be able to give me a clearer insight - I'll live.
Robert's Rules... I don't care for them either - I was throwing that out as an absurdity.  I was forced into being a PTA president and had to teach, follow and enforce the Rules to a bunch of lets call them ladies...  The Rules have their place, but only with a narrow group of people who want to use them in a useful way....
Is there a quorum present?

So I'm wondering if others have heard AFF perceived badly? And if so what we can do to change it. I know my experiences of AFF are the complete opposite of views like this which confuses me as to how they came about.

Moo,
Here's a blog from a couple months ago that talks about how to celebrate Autistic Pride Day. There's several less-than-ideal comments about AFF; I defended us, and explained *why* we're the way we are.  Smile

Over here AFF is considered radical and childish because of imature behaviors, and did you guys try to make aspies a seperate race (thats the rumor!).  Frankly to be honest you guys really do match your what the public feels about you if you ask me.

There are hundreds of active forum users/posters on here.  That statement most likely is based on you personal experiences with less than the number of fingers on one hand.

Don't let it get to you and try to continue in a positive direction. You know being immature isn't bad in and of itself.

Your response on that blog was very good. It was a good thing that you contributed or it seemed APD would not have been reported on by that reporter.

I'm refering to what people around me feel about AFF - and frankly you guys at times are a hell of a lot worse then Autism Speaks for self-advocacy.

Over the past several months I have asked a few people to come to AFF and tell me what they think. None have ever said anything nice or positive. They view us as a bunch of whiny, selfish people who do not understand a thing about the truth about curing autism. They see our fear of being 'killed off' as laughable or paranoid.

When I bring up Downs Syndrome and the abortion issue, they say autism  cant be compared to Downs Syndrome. They basically want nothing to do with AFF and our views on a cure.

to be honest - the bolded part is often the behavior shown here, and frankly its no wonder that people don't take AFF seriously.

Warning, totally off topic!  Ivar, are you back from vacation?  How was it?

I'm not trying to say anything negative about Rossco. I'm just saying that someone else made a nasty comment about him. I would like to get to know him because he seems popular here. So far, I think AFF is a positive place to be, even if there are disagreements.

You should head over to Rossco's bar!  You can get all kinds of drinks there, even ones that you can legally have!  Tongue

We would not want anyone arrested for serving virtual drinks to minors!

NYAJ, eat something and sit in front of your PC!

Now...Bag of hammers!

Rossco, Was that for TheZach only or do you think those are my veiws of AFF?
AFF is very helpful to me. I have learned so much about myself since coming here.
I cannot understand why TheZach comes here when he doesn't like us.
Here's what I think.  I think that it is very important to have humility and grace in all communities.  Sometimes the radical Aspie Supremacy thing can be really disturbing.  If taken with the humor or camaraderie that it is intended, it is totally fine and understandable, but the first time I saw it I was shocked.  I am really into neurodiversity and really into the world evolving socially to love, accommodate and integrate (but not streamline) all manifestations of humanity. But the separatist things really make me sad and I am an aspie fan!!!!

Also, the kind of elephant in the room is that often, people here (and on other boards) (AS and NT alike)  can be defensive.  Very defensive.  And quite obviously so.  There is a pattern of (a very very few) people being less than willing to take criticism and then dishing it out viciously... citing an advanced ability to be objective.  That can really make people wonder.  A giant chip on one's shoulder is not a convincing argument for a healthy community.  And it could reinforce the assumption that AS people are solipsistic and unempathtic.    Even though it is NOT NOT NOT the majority by any means.

Hope (again) I don't get my *** kicked for this.
