Who is GRASP?
Mission Statement
Because We Have an Obligation . . .
We, having been diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome or High-Functioning
Autism, and noting the steady increase in our own population, do
hereby affirm our responsibility to serve not just ourselves as a
community, but all of society and the world. To this end we will work
To increase public awareness of Asperger Syndrome and
High-Functioning Autism
To provide those with Asperger Syndrome and High-Functioning Autism
with a mutually-supportive community that is both comforting and
challenging to one another
To teach ourselves, through education and understanding, to maximize
the talents brought on by our condition; to harness the unique
capabilities and celebrate the accomplishments inherent in our
community
To teach ourselves, through education and understanding, to minimize
the damage brought on by our condition; to reduce the harm caused
when our behavior diverges from non-autistic norms
To become a national, and eventually, international force for change
in improving the lives of those with Asperger Syndrome and High-
Functioning Autism
I think its "damage brought on by our condition".
Could have used better wording for that really, I dont feel that we are "damaged".
Come on, folks! It's a start. And really, here we have people on disability-
Autism is NOT a disability per se. just because you have Low functioning autistics There are more low functioning NTs than there are low functioning autistics. Does that make bieng an NT a disability???
Do you really belong here?
The autism epidemic gets a lot of support because it is costing a ton.
errm excuse me what epidemic??? is it really costing??? I think that there are far more low functioning NT than LFAs. AND they are costing the most. Lets have a pre-natal test for NTs.
Also, autistic interaction with NTs does cause harm. I'm all for eliminating that.
It is the NTs who cause harm vis a vis their ignorance.
But among the GRASP leaders are good friends like (snip) Steve Shore, (snip)
He is a freind? the never ending grin?? He pockets money regardless of the damage to fellow aspies for his own enrichment??
that dumbass is no freind of mine.
However I would have like to call carley a friend. I think he has good intentions and does good work.
The good thing about GRASP is that it runs several apparently well-attended support groups in the NY area and also helps its people participate in various conferences.
well if they only have the "right " ideas
they can start something else or live with it. I would rather see Michael J and other peers get paid for helping us than some damn professional. I think his heart is in the right place.
Jerry Newport
So I am wondering the things I said to a certain person about shore and other matters already winded their way to you???
I would rather see Michael J and other peers get paid for helping us than some damn professional. I think his heart is in the right place.
Jerry Newport
ahh but who is doing the paying?? thats the question
And another thing
I laugh when I hear all these NEW people to autism say how much they CARE for LFAs and that I DONT!!!
In the mid 1990's I did respite for families with LFA children. They were non communicative. and supposedly so bound to their regimen. One guy, didnt get his drink and cookies that couple hour period. The NT parents were so upset but they could not believe he did not have an upsetment. This guy was fed junk at regular intervals in a day. Ridicous. No one gave a thought about his health.
ya know thinking about it they were communticative just not with language.
they would stim. and sometimes express emotions.
So To hear that the so called NT autism powers that be on LI dont like me. well, I dont like them either. They bad mouth me behind my back like good NTs all they want. But grasp's fixation is misplaced. Darius will never give back like a cotrell or koszinki could have. Those guys if properly mentored would have made contributions to society as a whole and just maybe help aspies in general one step closer tp economic empowerment.
{edited the characterization of grasp's fixation}
Do these GRASP people help and teach aspies to defend their own legal and human rights?
Are they working to reduce discrimination and mistreatment of autistic people in workplaces, from govt departments, from medical staff, in relationships and in schools? Are they trying to get laws changed or written?
or do they just offer tea and sympathy sessions, and training for aspies in how to express regret for not being NT and for acting differently to the norm?

I am not on either of their boards anymore. The last I heard, they did intend to take positions, such as backing "Michael's Law."
Isn't Michael's Law about drunk drivers? What has that got to do with AS/autism?

You just gotta love literal thinking! LOL
it's all good lili!
Noetic
I think jerry was refering to how michael carley runs grasp as michael's law. He was using a metaphor. Lili and you and I am sure others see that and immediately relate to something known to them under the same name not see the metaphor aspects
OK
Noetic
i misunderstood
you are right as is lili
I am wrong
I think this link gives info about Matthew’s Law:

Apparently Tabasco sauce, ammonia, lemon juice, electrical shocks, hair pulling, slapping, punching, witholding food, white noise helmets, mechanical restraints and other measures are used to make disabled people compliant, in NJ. It sounds so barbaric that it is hard to believe. There must be some company somewhere that maufactures these white noise helmets, knowing that they will be used to torment disabled people who could have unusual levels of sensory sensitivity.
Lili
there is also a parent's group aspergersexpress.com . We emailed them a few times to no avail. they ignore us. kinda like aha as pdd a group that claims to be advocates for high functioning autistics that no autistics in any leadership role whatsoever. We dont need to speak up. Those NTs will do it for us. very nice of them , really.
I met a member of congress about matthew's law. but they said ultimately it is a state issue and the federal govt cant get involved.
The federal govt is unable to make laws about issues as important as torture? It makes me wonder what they are there for, if they are unable to deal with such important issues.
It's a pity that some parent groups ignore adult autistics. It makes me wonder what they think their own kids are going to do when they grow up, if they think it is fine and reasonable to ignore and marginalise adult autistics. Do they expect everyone else will one day treat their own kids better than they treat the same kind of people as their own kids? Sounds like hypocrisy to me!
