RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive(some say independent) Discs.
there are a few versions, but put simply, its a way of either splitting data up across multiple drives, or writing the same data to multiple drives.
it allows for quicker access and easier data recovery.
its not something typically found outside of servers, although thats not to say you cant put it on your home system (depends on your motherboard), its just the "inexpensive" part is relative.
I dont know about electro-optical, unless Gareth means Optoelectronic....

You'd be hard pressed to find a home system without a RAID controller these days, it's just rarely configured.
..ok, let me rephrase that.
RAID is typically only found in a server environment, as, even though most 'boards these days have RAID built in, its not something most people use, because "Inexpensive" is relative.

which is something I've never understood...
if you are going to stick a pair of SATA drives in the damn thing, and it has RAID capability, why not just set them up for RAID 1?
I mean, even if people complain about not getting the full storage from the drives, they will soon grasp the concept of "failure" once it happens to the a couple of times...
actually, thinking of it like that, the companies stand to make more money by offering it just as a professional option, as they are more likely to understand exactly why "zomg half my memory (*mutter* storage..) is missing!"

ok, I have two points I'd like to raise here.
A. That is one awesome sounding experiment. I mean liquid nitrogen is cool enough (no pun intended), but Xenon, at the critical point? do you have any idea how crazy of a temperature and pressure you'd have to achieve for that?
B. 400 Meg HDD. Thats pretty impressive. I remember when hard drive didn't get that big. I also remember when 1GB HDD's were revolutionary

A terrabyte!? you lucky, lucky person. between every working HD in my house, I have about 70 GB's, 80 Gig's if you include Mp3 players in that

7200.11 1tb ~ £109
thats about 10p/GB

A terra for 109 Euros...that's like, what, something close to 160 in US dollars? (I think I might be off on that, just a guess)
and 10p/GB, 10 pence?
Sorry, I'm not familiar with European currency, at leat not yet

£ is pounds, thats British money
Pounds, Pence.
€ is Euro

oh wow, Thanks Pika! Of course, this means that i'll be wating until I get my certs, then saving money to get one, or two terra's. Heck, I might just save enough, and Build my own. (it's cheaper that way anyway)
