Here's a photo of one of the three gerbils which were born last Wednesday!

Surely more likely to feature on a cat menu! Available with whipped or pouring cream...

CUTE! It looks like a baby Hippopotamus!!!

At last!!!!  Someone with something nice to say!  Thank you!Big Grin

Yes, they do look like wee hippo's.  The other two are pink at the moment - I think they're going to be white.  None of them have any fur yet.

Oh, they're vicious. Big Grin You certainly wouldn't want marauding hordes of them! Tongue

Gerbils are illegal because California has about 20 species of native kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spp.), many of which are endangered. Because gerbils are basically the Asian equivalent of kangaroo rats, living in the same type of environment and filling the same niche, if they escaped into the wild and started breeding they could wreak havoc on fragile ecosystems. The list of rodents that are legal to own in California is as follows:

Domestic Rats
Domestic Mice
Siberian Dwarf Hamsters
Roborovski's Dwarf Hamsters
Syrian Hamsters
Chinchillas
Guinea Pigs

At least, these were the only species we were allowed to sell when I worked at a pet store.

Ah, that makes sense then. Smile

They're starting to get furry now - they're velvety at the moment and getting very active!

Yes!  It does look like a moomin! Smile
Here's a picture of all three of them, taken a few minutes ago! Smile  Their eyes still aren't open, but they're rapidly getting furrier and do a lot of squeaking!

Lol!  I didn't intend to have any baby gerbils.  There's a website called freeshare here, like ebay without the money, and someone posted to say they were overrun with gerbils as theirs were breeding like crazy...  I was under the impression that I was getting 3 females, but it turned out to be two females and one male - originally named Rose, now known as Ross! Wink

Once I work out the gender of the babies, I'll put any males in a separate tank with the father.  Gerbils don't like being on their own, they are very sociable animals - sleep in a heap and groom each other!  They're lovely pets....
Never heard of it being done, but I would think that if you got a guinea pig used to a leash at a young age, then it probably would be ok about it.

Where you took it would be more likely to be a problem - if there was any chance of meeting dogs or cats, maybe not a good idea....

A friend of mine once saw a girl walking a rabbit on a leash in a park, and she thought it was a bit strange especially given the number of dogs around.  She thought it must have been pretty scary for the rabbit!
Yeah, ferrets are brilliant!  Big Grin

Nobody's gonna mess with them, though...
I had a rat that would have lived on my shoulder if it could have!
Emmmmm.....don't know if my lovely gerbils are too happy about the way this thread is going....thawed and wiggled?!?! Tongue

Long time ago I kept a garter snake for a friend at uni whose mother refused to let him take back home for the holidays.  She ate frozen whitebait (tiny fish), which I thawed quickly in boiling water before feeding to her.

Haha, well thankfully gerbils aren't fed to captive snakes... They tend to be a bit more dangerous than the standard fare. When will your babies be opening their eyes and starting to explore?

I'm not sure when their eyes will open, but they're already starting to explore.  When I took them out to take their photo today one of them managed to get up my sleeve and fall asleep there.  I had to take my jumper off very, very carefully, and there was the wee thing, curled up and fast asleep! Smile

Are you going to keep the baby gerbils?

I know someone who made silly hats for their rodent pets to wear.

I think I will keep them, but I'll separate the males and females so I don't end up with hundreds of them!

Lol at the hats!  Don't see gerbils wearing hats for long - they'd shred them! Big Grin

LOL gerbil therapy... I can see them lying on a psychiatrist's sofa, shaking and saying "thats why I ended up on the crystal meth doc... it was AFF...*strangulated sob*"
