I don't know about gerbils, but pet rabbits are illegal here (Queensland) for the same reason - they're an environmental pest.

Awww.. they're like baby rats. We don't have gerbils over here, so I think rats or guinea pigs are probably the closest thing. Are you hand rearing them so you can sell them?
Dunno about guinea pigs, but you can do that with ferrets...

I fell in love with a seventh grade gerbil in life science class, her name was Peggy.
We got a stray cat in 10th grade, Caesar, and I forgot all about gerbils and rodents. Stray and rescued cats can be very very very friendly to the humans that rescue them adopt them or whom they adopt.
