We do need to step up the publicity, feel free to inform and educate any media outlets you can, and they can get more info on http://www.autisticprideday.com

Any volunteers for a press officer?
Well maybe someone else will offer....and btw I am a cyborg and the forum is digitally connected to my brain, I answer posts by blinking in morse code.
don't be silly, you answer posts via your built-in wifi transceiver Wink
That would be great, include the date too so everyone will know when it is!
If you can do that Pikachu it would be great.
I have just been in contact with the NAS at their press office and sent them an email describing Autistic Pride Day. Hoping to hear back from them soon.
Hi Roderick, you have to bear in mind, we do as much as we can every day, like everyone does, and we only have so much time. Also we are very disorganized, I have real difficulites with executive function, I wonder how I get anything done.

But we do very well considering

I write press releases that go out over the internet every few weeks, and they seem to do quite well. Maybe in the future we can get a dedicated press officer and do more.
The autistic rights movement has been described as ad hoc. We have created the autism assembly in order to have a coalition of people and groups with similar views and aims, primarily the cure issue. http://www.autism-assembly.com

Aside from that we do communicate with other groups if possible, its not always possible/easy.
In the last 6 months we have seen great strides made however. Bonnie has her site Aspergian Pride, that has also united people with positive views.

As for getting involved with mainstream media, its not that easy, I am shy and am not the type of person to be a politician and approach people in that sense. But I try and work with the strengths that I do have, I think we can all do that.

Press releases put out on the internet go to google news and get sent to groups and media that accept google news alerts.
So many more people see them than if one release went to a local newspaper in Hertfordshire, for instance.
Google alerts can be for any subject, so that a group for autism would ask to be sent autism alerts, a group for chess could get chess alerts, etc.

Google searches for news items and press releases on all subjects and send them out to those who request them.

There was an article in the Telegraph that was essentially about AFF but there was a big gaffe on the fact that he used the name ALF which doesn't exist.

Hi amy,
This post is a little late, but for the 2006 autistic pride day, I could try getting medeia near me intrested in this association.  Aradio station that I love,(not to mention spend six hours tuning into because I freak out some htinsg),  They always are anouncing the diferent benifites and special things that are going on in our area, so much that they get stuck in listeners brains.  I could also see about them having a discusion durring one of the talk shows when it gets close to APD.

I could alsow try wrighting to newspaper collums, that are published both localy and nationlay.  I might be good at this becaues I do like to write.

Is it to early to start campainging?
Are these good things to try?
Those things are great to try. In the monthly AFF meeting last night, we declared the poll winner for the theme for APD 2006 - 'celebrate neurodiversity'.

So we can now start publicity for 2006 and making people aware that its a yearly event, not just a one-off.
If you feel anxious about it, we could make a smaller room, with just a couple of us if you might find it easier to talk like that.

I know what you mean about neurodiversity as a word, but it was the most popular for people.
Its possible that the media will pick up on the meaning and explain it to people.

I am old enough to remember when people were confused by what feminism meant.
(admittedly some still are).

Hi amy,

I posted a little while back saying that I might be able to get the word out (ugg that sounds like that evil ASA site).  I was wondereing how do we want to do it?  What exactly do we want NT's to see about APD?  I was hoping that sombody might be able to explain how we want to get the informatin to people.

If anyone could help it would be greatily apreciated.
Hi Guest, would you be able to come to the chatrooms to discuss it in detail, as planning is needed.
