IS this true....?  1st post had this in it:*** But GINA does not prohibit discrimination once someone already has a disease, and some experts said such protection would have to be the next step. ****
what does this mean for aspergers/autism - as it stands now people can be denied to get coverage for autsim - even thought it is NOT a disease... anyone?

This unwillingness of the wealthy to pay taxes just promotes the divides between the rich and the poorer.

The wealthy will never pay taxes.  The middle pays the taxes.  The wealthy have the ear of government--even of leftist politicians.  The poor have no money.  So it's the working middle that pays for everything.

The wealthy pay taxes just like everyone else, and in fact often end up paying more since the % on income tax increases as income increases. Personally I view this as quite perverse - punishing someone for being successful via higher tax rates.

But isn't that what socialism--I mean "public aid" is all about--hurt the rich for daring to be rich?

What Gareth and Dogbrain say is true... the rich do pay plenty (not the owners of huge compaines) but everybody else.  AND the middles class is breaking under the pressure.  AND we americans DO want national healthcare AND taxes would NOT go up.

MY husband/our family of five, pays over 15,000 per year on health coverage Plus deductibles of $250.00 per person, plus only 80% gets paid and we have the best insurance -all together - dental, eye, etc., of anyone I know.  on top of it we pay about forty grand a year in federal taxes, and more in state and sales taxes, food taxes - real estate taxes average about 10,00o per year per house in my neighborhood, plus home insurance etc., can you believe it, there is a tax on tea here?!  Car insurance runs abour 2,500 per year.  The reason alot of these fees and taxes are so high is each and every one of these businesses has to self-insure or their employess for, you guessed it, healthcare.  The amount of middle men is astounding - cut them out and alot of waste will be cut - taxes would not go up.

Oops just realized this is a genetic thread... Anyone want to tell me how to go about stopping that the discrimination of my son when he is older  - to get insurance - if the US still doesn't have national healthcare....?

Insurance has gone up about 20 to 25% every year for the past 5 years.  Our BIG three auto makers are buckling under the pressure of paying thier retiress and current workers insurance (even though most company provided insurance is only about 1/2 paid - 1/2 is picked up by the employee).  I am very concerned about the discrimination of EVeRYONE with ANY health issue.  The ONLY was to guarantee NO discrimination is national healthcare.
The only way.

and Workers in the US who are lucky enough to have even partially pais health insurance by their employers are more easily abused - they stay in their jobs for FEAR of losing insurance.  People working under fear makes people act and be inhumane to others out of a sense of protection.

Actually, the ONLY way is to nationalize all industries and abolish all private property and private housing.  FORCE ALL PEOPLE TO LIVE IN LABOR CAMPS!  IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GUARANTEE NO DISCRIMINATION!

Likewise, CONFISCATE ALL PERSONAL BELONGINGS.  Make the wearing of government-issued uniforms MANDATORY!  IT'S THE ONLY WAY TO GUARANTEE NO DISCRIMINATION!

Deviation from the norm SHALL BE PUNISHED!  It is DISCRIMINATORY!

Oops. The only way to Guarantee NO discrimintion (in healthcare services) is national healthcare (in the US).

Problem with our democracy - snippet from a portion of Rev. Martin Luther Kind Jr speech...

Democracy is the greatest form of government to my mind that man has ever conceived, but the weakness is that we have never touched it. Isn’t it true that we have often taken necessities from the masses to give luxuries to the classes? Isn’t it true that we have often in our democracy trampled over individuals and races with the iron feet of oppression? Isn’t it true that through our Western powers we have perpetuated colonialism and imperialism? And all of these things must be taken under consideration as we look at Russia. We must face the fact that the rhythmic beat of the deep rumblings of discontent from Asia and Africa is at bottom a revolt against the imperialism and colonialism perpetuated by Western civilization all these many years. The success of communism in the world today is due to the failure of democracy to live up to the noble ideals and principles inherent in its system.****   - MLK Jr.

It's just that when you pay taxes for health care, the government is usually quite inefficient at distributing them... you pay more in taxes than you would for insurance and a lot of the money goes to people organizing the system rather than to pay for health care. I don't know what it is about America, but socialized *anything* doesn't seem to work very well here.

The administrative costs of universal healthcare is less than the US's current one. Basically we have a huge private bureaucracy of insurance companies, HMO's, hospitals and what not.

People seem not to realize that there are different models of universal healthcare. There's the NHS model, governement funded and provided. The single payer model, government funded privately provided care. The social health insurance model, compulsory insurance for some basic plan with subsidies for the poor.

The last model generally does the best. It has the universal aspects without the long waiting lines for elective procedures the other models suffer from.

GnosisRoads - here here! I raise a glass to you.  There are so many good ideas and ideas that have worked and do work.  The US throws good money after bad, it is a fact that a lack of money is not the Us's problem as to why there is no national healthcare...

(I think it is to "keep us all down")< not willing to argue with anyone  about it though)

OOOH! I was in an argument?! - I missed it!  ;o(

Was it the one about quoting Martin luther king jr and democracy and Dogbrain took a sentence out and pretended I was FOR cummunism and to be mad about that?, or was there an actual argument?

Come on do more graphics, they are cool!
Pikajedi - I messed up a bunch of times but Imanaged to post a picture thanks to you and quickduck!  Check it out ...
I'm not totally opposed to prenatal testing (hell my mother tried to get it for me...she just wanted to better prepare) but I can see where it would be problematic.

As someone who has a genetic disorder...who deals with insurance not insuring her because it's "too expensive..."...who deals with the risk of not getting employment in the future because of what could happen...Yeah I do want legal protection that I won't be discriminated against simply because of my genetic makeup.  Ever see Gattica and Ultraviolet????

Erm I shouldn't get involved however with the benefits snarfus that is ensuing in this thread...
