Julian Jaynes (1920-1997) hypothesized that until recently human beings had a different "consciouness" until modern times. You can see his theory with some facts at http://www.julianjaynes.org/ .
His magnum opus is "the origin of consciousness in the breakdown of the bicameral mind" (1981). He describes it as schizoprenic-like.
But if you read with the undestanding of aspergers and HFA. It seems as if he was really describing autism. IOW we were first. NT-ism is the recent innovation that nature is weeding out. Just that when he did his research this was not out there like it is today.
