DogBrain - I obviously have nothing more than a cursory idea of the UK government - other than the definition on parlaiment etc.,   I do watch the televised house of commons with your prime minister (on CSPAN a Cable show) and I like that setup better.
I highly doubt though, that the Uk citezens are raped more (percent of income wise) then we americans - and we don't even get healthcare.
you guys are awesome - brief summary - love it!

I could comment on the situation in Iraq, Afghanistan but I won't bother.

Drafts don't really produce the best army unless the homeland is really threatened.  The best soldiers are people who want to be soldiers and are carefully screened to keep out the crazies.

So?  The "best" army from the point of view of combat effectiveness is not necessarily the "best" situation from the point of view of forcing government officials to actually act in a responsible manner.  The more distant the threat of military service is from the majority of people, the more irresponsibly our government can get away with acting via that military.

"They" are getting away with murder - literally and figuratively - "they" being the top puppet masters.

Unlike the previous "volunteers" who really belived in the cause, it is hard to believe in "the cause" in this circumstance.  So unless, you need the "signing bonus"  or have less options due to living in an area whose economy has taken a real bad turn so you have less options.  The recruiters are out of luck - so the age is upto 35 or 37!  This past year they have lowered the restrictions on who can enlist- now people who were previously convicted with robbery and other felony charges are being accepted at record levels. 7% I think. I hope there is a draft, if not, then this set of "wars'  will go on and on and my 2 boys (okay ds #1 aspie might get a pass) but my other son adn maybe my daughter will get drafted later - start a draft now, and the wars end now. (just my opinion)

My husbands age group, he is 49, got lucky, they just missed vietnam and until the gulf war there was no action really- a career in the military with a 15 year stretch and no armed conflicts - is not how it is now.

Countries with mandatory

If Americans associated defending their own homeland with compulsory military service instead of exporting themselves into other countries conflicts -- they would have a positive view of conscription.

There is also a democratic process in their country that allows them to suggest changes to their government's laws and policies.  It is very easy to write, phone or email a government representative's office.  It is not just "we get to vote for president only every five years".  Protest marches are just mostly ineffective.  I often wonder how many people contacted their government offices about any of the issues that they protest about or even rant on about on the internet.  YOU GOT A DEMOCRACY ----USE IT!

I quite agree.

Use it or lose it applies yet again.
